The sole is thick and chunky, which is in right now, and also disguises the fact that they have a 1.5" heel, which is about as high as a man can get away with. The eyelet tabs, with 3 eyelets, are in a V shape that points to the toe, which is the only way I will tolerate a derby shoe. The contrast sole is contrast only by virtue of being a lighter color than the upper (most black shoes used to have a brown sole) so it's contrast but not obnoxiously so. Overall they're quite flashy and chunky while being at their core just a black patent oxford.

Also, UO carries pieces from many high quality brands, often for a much lower price. You know this.
