I didn't go through a grad scheme, I got hired through a traditional interview. I had lots of code samples and had done some published research with a similar slant to what they were looking for. The older stuff is a clusterfuck of COBOL and a mish mash of other stuff, with bits of string and gum holding it together. Luckily I'm working on HFT, and it's a pretty recent greenfield project so mostly C and C++ with various bits of scripting languages. If you can handle the people and the hours the work is cool, but I haven't found one person I have regular contact with who I wouldn't under normal circumstances enjoy punching in the mouth, and the hours are killer so I can't spend much time with the people in the city I actually do like. It's all pretty cliched work to live bullshit, but It certainly feels pertinent at the moment. Maybe I just need a holiday and to get laid, but I spend my weekends sleeping and working. Might go to inferno's tomorrow and pull a slapper to make me feel better.

It took me longer than most to adjust, but I love it right now (despite the shitty cold). Seems like there's not as much activity in the frats this term, so more people are staying in and bonding etc. As far as academics... Do you remember when you were a kid, and you thought adults knew everything? And when you got older, you slowly realized that they're just people too? Well all three of my profs this term are like savants in their fields and it's almost intimidating how much they know. At the same time, they're down to earth and friendly enough to give help to those who need it (2/3 of mine in fact force me to schedule meetings with them just to get acquianted). Largest class so far has 20-30 people.

Cities: You can regularly get to NYC or Boston via a 2-3 hour Dartmouth coach ride! I've used it a few times.

Students: There's no denying that Dartmouth has the highest enrollment of kids who came from private schools (50% i think). But it's not suffocating and I haven't met anyone I'd consider a douche yet.

I know two people from Alabama, and only one is considered a hick because he acts like one (and says he is). But I mean that in the most loving way haha. I come from a public school in Texas and I haven't had problems making friends.

University just means your school has graduate studies. Most universities have separate colleges within them designated for undergraduate education. You never specified your level of education. fucking nice. way nicer than even higher ranking studios ive been in. theres two plotters open to any year arch/larch, 3 dedicated 4th and 5th year plotters, two laser cutters, an extremely well equipped wood working shop, two CNC mills, two six axis arms and a 9 axis arm, printers macs a4 sized scanners and pcs up the ass, and 1 shitty large format scanner. the bulding is super nice (pic is the first year studio, where i am) and you get more room to work the higher up you go. one of my TAs is a grad student and he gets free tuition plus $7k a year for being a TA, has his own office, and still gets to work on his thesis as well as a few side projects.

short and long is its really nice, take a look if you can visit. ill leave you my email so you can get in touch if you want, just remind me of this thread.
