Who's Picasso of the fashion world? Who's Henri Matisse? Who's Yves Klein?

It's really hard to say, chronically you could say that Demeulemeester, Margiela = van Gogh. But how would it fit stylistically?
You couldn't realistically say that Yoshi is Picasso, or could you?

Can you compare Lagerfeld or Tom Ford with Klimt?

There are parallels, but they just don't feel right. Fashion is highly dependent on the marketing too and promises something, that clothes alone cannot deliver.

The contrast gets starker if we don't limit these thoughts to paintings - art is being expressed in sculptures, performances and media in general. I rather feel the top designers are actually making every day art and enrich our experience that way .

PS: written while waiting for my zara and cos items.

hmmm i don't know much about paintings but i know a little about architecture

i would say hedi slimane is similar to james stuart in that james stuart pioneered greek revival neoclassicism and hedi brought back skinny jeans and slim elongated silhouettes

Yamamo and the 2 Belgians obviously have studied Deconstructivism and the modern art history. So they are setting in later than turn of the century art - much closer to their own time.

But should their clothes be called abstract? what would they stand for? it just doesn't feel right to me. They are practically much closer to architecture or every day goods still. it's called "designer" for reason.

Patrik Ervell probably Constable

I love to compare designers to authors or painters, first to come to mind as picasso would be issey miyake or rei kawabuko.

Mind if we get some definitions going?

For me at least, Picasso = Tom Ford, talented, but also extremly famous, conceited, conscious of their fame, and too many hack-ish tendencies

Kawakubo = Matisse, also obviously talented, famous only in a (very slightly) more restricted medium, progenitors of massively influential movements in their fields (or at least they get that label retroactively applied to them)

Klein: don't know anyone as revolutionary

You idiots can't compare artists to fashion designers. It doesn't work that way.
