I have a Bulova similar to that pic, and I'd recommend the Bulova for you. I actually own a DW watch, because I was stupid back then. The Bulova gets more wrist time, and it just feels more solid.

I think that's a 70s Seiko Lord Matic. That particular one, in addition to missing an index, is missing a seconds hand since Seiko doesn't do two-handers. It would need to be completely rebuilt for three times what you pay to buy it.

Search "lord matic" on ebay and you can find some gorgeous vintage Japanese pieces right now, mostly coming out of the Philippines.

Most military individuals do it. If you have a non-metalic or matte watch band, it reflects less light. You can also see it when holding a rifle. Plus, it takes less wrist movement to see it. I actually wear mine with the face on the side of my wrist. It's the most efficient, in my opinion.

I'm wanting to get this Seiko, but I'm having trouble deciding on a band. Is this a good match in leather color? Is the expansion band too gaudy? If it was gold, I would get the expansion band, but anyway. Is there another band that would look good on it? Should I just keep the original?

>> No.7488408

>>7488360
Be careful with the finish of the casing and the bracelet. The watch casing is made in a brushed steel finish, so it isn't too shiny. The expansion bracelet kind of looks polished, which means shiny. If you mismatch the two--brushed case and polished bracelet, it will all look like shit. In any case, the expansion bracelet wouldn't look good at all.

For the cream dial of that watch, the leather band should work well. Don't worry too much about the finish of the buckle since it isn't seen as much.

for amphibias: i have a thing for divers, and for modeslty sized watches (the amphibia is 40mm). People talk a lot about the kitchy soviet-design, but I think the scuba-dial is actually pretty tasteful (mine is in brown, pic related). It keeps decent time and it is rated to 200m, all for under 100 bucks, pretty great.

The shortcomings are that there is pretty much zero lume, and the bezel is also pretty much nonfunctional (which for being a dive watch is shitty: bidrectional, no distinct clicks).

as for the monster: its aesthetic is certainly not for everyone. I like it because it is a wholly original take on the dive watch, while still being geared strictly for function (a submariner homage it is it). And, despite its name, at 42mm, its pretty damn modest as fair as modern dive watches go. Like I said, though, I now just mainly wear it for weekends and travel, or out to bars: where I want to flaunt a bit of manly steel or just need to wear a watch that I dont care if it gets scratched up)

(that all being said, I do have my eyes on a sk009, or, a bit longer term, an MM30... fuckin beautiful)

By that logic. no high-end mechanical watch is worth their ridiculous price. If it's a quartz watch you like, it could be worth as much as the most expensive mechanical and still be worth it to you.

quartz watches do not justify such high prices because of simplicity of the movements and low resale value. even though they are more durable (drops on the floor for example) and accurate than mechanicals price for making one is much lower than price for assembling even the simplest (hour/minute/sec) mechanical watch. in case of expensive quartz you will be mostly paying for brand.

if you think you're getting your monies worth for mechanical watches you're dumb

construction may be more intricate and materials more expensive but they still cost several times more than the production, just as with quartz watches

mechanical watches are a status symbol and that's why people buy them, nothing else

>> No.7505351

>>7505285
ETA 2824 costs about 40-50EUR. Valjoux 7750 100-200EUR. Not to even mention other bulk produced mechanical movements from Asia etc.

These movements are used up to 2-3k USD watches, many of which /fa/ regularly drool over.

So there's nothing fundamentally wrong with paying for quartz. First of all pretty much ALL watches after certain price point are luxury items and priced as such. There's no point or need to try to justify with price with build related things.

I can't really blame them for charging like that though, that's how watch shops stay in business. The margins aren't huge on low-end watches and they don't sell many high end ones, so they have to keep the rent paid with service and accessories. I paid $25 for a $15 NATO strap at my local one a few days ago, sure I could've gotten it cheaper online but supporting the local store matters to me more than a few bucks and not having to wait for shipping helps too.

>> No.7508548

That's also why they charge $16 for link removal or addition. Luckily the watch I needed it for had a store in my mall, so they do it for free forever. But investing in one of those pin removal sets seems like a good idea too.

>> No.7508882

>>7508548
Yeah. I just picked up a springbar pusher and a pair of link pin pliers from Harbor Freight the other day, takes about 5 minutes to figure out and then you're good. I'd get a better link pusher for expensive watches though, since this one has metal-on metal contact, but for cheaper ones it's no problem. (And the metal that touches the watch seems to be aluminum so maybe it's not an issue since it's softer than steel.)

It's pretty cool how good watch brands are about service, it's part of why I'm dying to get a Speedy down the line.
