sup fags

i want to start a small *streetwear* brand as a hobby
if you know anything about that stuff, it would be great if you could help me out a bit:

1. printing shirts: i'm planning to do mostly multicolored prints, so what are good printing methods? what are good t-shirt brands for printing on?
2. shop system: is bigcartel fine?
3. is there any interest in eu? for the time being i want to do stuff similar to pic related
4. probably stupid question: how strict are the copyright laws? am i gonna get my ass sued for printing anime characters?
bonus: w2c reflective materials?

tl; dr: if you hate graphic t's feel free to ignore this thread

>> No.7440388

>streetwear brand
>going to screenprint AA tees and put them on bigcartel

graphic tees are fine but the shit you're doing is highschool """"fashun designer XD"""" tier

you're going to be just like every other fuccboi on bigcartel selling bullshit low quality prints to other fuccbois from tumblr

>> No.7440412

>>7440388
this

why don't you try actually making designs instead of just printing stupid tumblr shit

>> No.7440423

>>7440388
i totally get what you mean but i don't see where else i could start with a small budget
i'm not even pretending to be some kind of designer or anything i just want to do some stuff that i myself would want to wear and if there's interest i could improve qualitywise and do more interesting stuff than just printed tshirts
i might do sewing as well as silkscreen printing myself but that would be a bit of a different story i guess

>> No.7440502

>1. printing shirts: i'm planning to do mostly multicolored prints, so what are good printing methods? what are good t-shirt brands for printing on?
idk about printin methods but AA are good to print on
>2. shop system: is bigcartel fine?
yeah sure

3. is there any interest in eu? for the time being i want to do stuff similar to pic related
yeah i'm in ireland and i copped that mutantminds tee so if you make some cool shit then i'll prolly cop

ps do a shirt with Makoto or Rei from Free! on it

well you can try a little harder if you want this to be profitable. You should have done SOME research before making a thread and given us an idea of what you were trying to do.

Like ffs you could've looked up "diy screenprinting" and found out about diff methods and then asked us

You need only 2 things
a) good quality & nice fit t shirt
b) original prints

If you will have both, you can sell them via email, tumblr or whatever, there is no need in making shop. You just need to start. Anyway, i had experience in that shit and i can recommend you to start with original t-shirts, not just prints on Hanes or FoL. Just make blank t shirts with some nice little details and you will sell more, because i can make good quality print for 10EUR, so everyone else too. But if you have some great ideas and you're good graphic designer, then okay, but if you will use second-rate ideas like your pic related, then forget it.

Yes. For example, you can buy one expensive t-shirt with best fit ever and make a copy from it, then add your details, like cycling pockets on the back, small prints in JAPANESE or some shit like that. I bet this stuff will be hot.
>i was thinking about that too but is it easy to get nice materials?
I don't know where you live, but yeah, materials search will consume 50% of your time. And you can always rise the price, if your t shirt will be made from RARE JAPANESE 100% COTTON.

i'll do that soon.

>> No.7442663

you seem misguided, op. before you even begin considering to print something you should come up with an original design that you, as a consumer would want to buy.

and for the love of god, when and if you do decide to print tees, don't use AA. they're completely fucked.

There's nothing wrong with it, but if you want to do it legally then you should play by the rules. Big media companies probably aren't going to hassle small guys like you but if you see any kind of success/growth, you can be sure the copyright holders are going to want their slice of the pie, or sue you.

just make something decent and original, you dont even have to have any of the skills or do any of the work, you just have to have the vision

and you need fucking good taste

if you have killer taste then yes do it, pay artists you like to make original content for you, source good quality clothing and printing places, or set up DIY screenprinting while you start off

if youre gunna do something for the love of god do it properly, there are SO many people doing startup brands badly these days that its disgusting and now whenever someone tells me theyre starting a brand i just fucking cringe

blow em all out the water or dont bother is my advice

>> No.7445769

>>7440385
>printing shirts: i'm planning to do mostly multicolored prints, so what are good printing methods? what are good t-shirt brands for printing on?
Screenprint instead of heatpress. It's more expensive, but it lasts longer and looks better

>> No.7445791

>>7445690
Check your local print shop and see if they'd be willing to do you a solid if you can stand to have a direct-to-garment done.

It'd be hard to find a shop that'll make screens for you (it's not THAT hard but it's definitely an involved process that costs money) just for one tee. So yeah, redbubble is your best bet pretty much.

>> No.7445795

>>7440385
OP it sounds like you're trying to do this on the cheap.

Just fucking don't, set up a redbubble and post your designs to it. If you make money on redbubble, save that shit up to start your own printing system.

For single tees I typically use a simple design and vinyl press. if you want a single shirt, know that a screen will cost about $75 and then $10 for each additional colour (sometimes more depending on where you go, especially because another colour mean another screen).

i guess i won't be able to convince you but i think the shirt in the op and pic related are *original* though they're using non-original images
imo it's almost impossible to do something completely original since you always draw influences from other things whether this is conscious or not
maybe watch this "everything is a remix" movie, iirc it's a bit exaggerated in there but you get the idea
>>7446981
that's great, but as you see i'm far from the point where i'm ready to actually print something and i'm also more interested in realising my own ideas for now
if you really want to i'd recommend trying the same thing i'm doing, imo selling designs without having a name is neither profitable nor really fulfilling as an artist
it would also be easier for you to collaborate with someone from your area so you can properly sit down and discuss it and see the product in person etc
if you don't want to take my advice, leave me your mail or sth, i'll hit you up when i'm at a point where it's worth talking about collaborating

i think you can only do silkscreen printing at that price point, a friend of mine uses stanley&stella tees since they're organic and w/e but tbh i don't know about the quality. i think there are actually lots of smaller brands that might be cheaper, i just checked the tag on a band shirt that has decent fit/quality and was 15$ and it's from "next level apparel"
