If you had posted something from a highscool reading list like The Great Gatsby or 1984 is would have been good bait.

People would attack it for being too entry-level (rightly so) and people would defend it for being good anyway (also right).

But Dan Brown?

It's just to fucking obvious man. No one here will defend that shit, and no one will bother to shit on it either... because it's just so goddamn lowbrow that there wouldn't even be a point.

Then just browsing fashion forums is probably more interesting. Rick and Yohji have had monographs made, but they're more coffee table books and don't give you that much of a narrative, though "My Dear Bomb" is the closest thing that exists for Yohji. There are also several overviews of modern Japanese fashion like Akiko Fukai's "Future Beauty". There are also larger-context historical costume books, too.

it's not a great picture for anyone just starting though

if you hand a beginner Ulysses he will just decide that reading is not his cup of tea

actually I started trying to read Ulysses early on, and put it aside until I'd read a little bit more. it's a slow read if you're coming from not much more experience than high school and a first year of university.

Actually, I've yet to get back to it. I'm not entirely happy about that. But I'll get to it eventually. Maybe this summer.

My 16-year-old (then 15) brother went on a canoeing trip over the summer so I lent him my copy of Don Quixote, and he finished it; he said he enjoyed it. That was one of the first books I really liked. I'd recommend it to people who are genuinely interested in getting started with reading. It's relatively readable, and it's one of those things you need to be familiar with anyway.

Then again, I've heard people say it's a pain to read. Your mileage may vary.

I haven't read a whole lot, I'm sad to say. My favourite book, to this day, is probably The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow. It made me realize that I want to read a lot more. And to some extent, it changed my whole outlook on life.

Another book I was quite impressed by was Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I marked my copy up so badly while doing an essay on it that I bought another copy. I thought it was very good.

I probably wouldn't want to talk about any of it on /lit/ though. I actually like books right now

I'm not disputing that. I'm saying that being a tough read should not be "why he is god tier".

It reminds me of the same disturbing impulse that exists on /mu/ and other art boards: where "entry-level" becomes a mark against the work rather than something to be said in its praise.

Elitism has no place in art, though it seems to be a common vice among those who enjoy it.
