For what you paid for, they actually work well. They don't provide the watch-in-a-jar resistance of a Submariner, but they certainly keep on ticking after a dive.

The Techne dial looks a lot better in person. It's got some textural depth that you can't really see in this picture. The case on this one is what does it for me, the brushed steel is sexy as fuck

Guys, I said it was a "Raketa Copernicus".

Raketa is the manufacturer. It is a famous Russian watch company.

The model is called "Copernicus", hence the sun and moon design.

Look at alternate Eastern spellings like, Copernic, Kapernik, etc.

For a watch like this, you should only spend upwards of $70. Nothing more. Heres a link:

Unfortunately there isn't much out there that is affordable, unique, and not some retarded fashion brand that isn't a real watchmaker.
Raketa has several old models that are all unique, Poljot and Vostok has some interesting vintage ones too. There's other Russian brands like Luch, Pobeda, Slava, and so forth. Raketa's newer stuff is among some of my favorites but they're much more expensive.
Seiko has a ton of models you might find something you like, such as all their divers, but other brand vintage divers too that aren't copying Rolex.
Sea Gull and some other Chinese brands have some dressier but unique designs.
Few other brands to throw out: Mondaine, Obris Morgan, Bathys.

They knew that once quartz was out it was all over, and they made the right move. You can ogle gears easily, and get an emotional feeling from looking at them. Personally I think Spring Drive is an awesome idea but at this point there is no real reason for anything but a 32khz quartz oscillator that costs $1. These "innovations" exist because they are cool, not because they offer a real practical benefit.

Not everything. For some reason the Japs decided that their entry level watches all need to look like shit. That's why German entry level watches are so popular among /fa/ people, and even Swiss. There are lots of beautiful German and Swiss watches available for around $1k, but what does that get with Japan? A butt ugly Citizen Exceed or maybe an Orient Star.

There's brilliant stuff in Japan though at all price points, but if you go to a jewelry shop or mall in America, Seikos and Citizens are shitty two-tone crap, often black ion plated, and with crappy bracelets and no water resistance.

real talk: ck and fossil both routinely use miyota quartz movements. my first quartz analog watch in the early 90s was a fossil and I wore it daily for 8 years. The 5 doesn't pretend to be what it's not. It's a cheap watch, plain and simple. I wasn't referring solely to the Seiko 5 series (even though it may be popular on this board), and the 5 series is definitely not the only type of Seiko out there.

as far as "shit ass designs" go, both Seiko and fossil produce (as I have said earlier in the thread) some ugly watches and some good looking watches. generalizing a huge brand like that is stupid. I agree that in general a "watch brand" is a nice way of assuring a quality product but if you think a $65 Seiko has the same QC as a $5000 Seiko you're deluded.

that's what I always thought so it's good to hear some confirmation from someone who has shopped for them in Japan (last trip there was before I cared about watches and lately I've not been past passport control in narita)

seems like they are ignoring a potential market, if I want a new $1400 watch I'll end up looking at exclusively swiss and German which seems a shame.
