So much this.
I feel very bad when my parents, who already dont have that much money, buy me expensive stuff.

And they always have.

And once i got older i realized they really dont make that much money. It's a mystery how they pulled it off.

Just thinking about it makes me feel bad. Im always greatful for everything i get.

Furthermore, seeing someone unhappy when they open a present makes me literally want to kill the person. I dont care if you got a damn set of silverware for a present, you open it and you god damn like it.

That's why I always buy all of my clothing myself. Since I don't spend much money on anything else besides clothing, I never ask for anything for Christmas, but my parents always insist on getting me something. Besides I'm always copping stuff through the year so chances are I have already purchased all the pieces I wanted. So my list is usually full of stuff I need or cheap things so as to not break their bank. Currently:

Vox coily cable
eBow
Super Mario Advance 4
Game Boy Advance charger
Moleskine notebook
Ragtime: 15 Pieces for Piano Solo (On the Lighter Side)
Two tees from Last but Won and Komono sunglasses

When they can't figure what to gift me I just ask for a couple of bucks to invest on clothing.

This, a lot. The indignant fury I felt last Christmas seeing the posts by entitled teenage fucktards shitting all over Twitter with posts about how their FAGGOT MOMS AND DADS DIDN'T GET THEM A CAR (or worse THE WRONG COLOR IPHONE) filled me with a rage so white-hot it could power a small town all winter. Even if it's something wretched, you smile and you say "thank you" because somebody was nice enough to pick out a gift for you, you worthless cakes of shit. Later on you can sell it or exchange it or trade it or donate it to a homeless shelter (like that would ever cross these blackholes of entitlements' tiny minds), but don't you dare spit in the face of people who care about you like that.

You sound like a mature and decent person, which is an increasingly rare thing these days. Don't stop being a man(/woman) of quality.

Now back to using detective skills to try and figure out what my dad wants for Christmas, since whenever I ask him directly I just get a "all I want in this world is for you and your brother to be happy" answer.

I just think of a few things I want and give a short list to people who ask. I vary it in price from expensive things (furniture, leather boots) to midrange (perfume, weeaboo goods) to cheapish (books or vidya, or nice personal grooming stuff like Philosophy body wash); that way people can choose something they have money for and it'll be more of a surprise for me once I open the gift and/or the card on Christmas.

I don't want much effay stuff this Christmas, aside from Dior Addict EDP (and maybe some more La Petite Robe). I'd like some nice boots or a cork bag, but I don't know atm where to find either of those things.

It was hard buying for my dad until I figured out that at that age the best gift is a break.

For christmas I took him out fishing the weekend after new years. We had a BBQ and I bought him some top shelf whiskey we shared, and we camped out together.

If you have a way to organise a day off for him, (I found a babysitter for my siblings, found my mom something to do) he'll appreciate it

Get her some small sizes of nice shit at Sephora or someplace like that. You could get a handful of cool things for $25 easily. Look at the editor's choice awards on Temptalia; she has picks for budget cosmetics and such specifically in addition to high-end. Women love getting stuff like that as gifts, and even if she doesn't wanna use it or has allergies or something she can always give it as a gift to someone else down the line. I always grab something unopened out of my beauty box to take as a hostess gift when I don't have time to buy wine or food.

That is a very nice idea. It's a little harder to do with my dad because he's self-employed and works from home, so he actually takes it pretty easy most of the day. We spend a lot of time chilling together, usually drinking and watching TCM or talkin' bout opera, plus since I am lolunemployed right now I already do all the cleaning and yardwork around the place.

But (and thanks for indirectly reminding me of this) my brother and I got him a massage and spa course for his birthday one year and he really liked it; he was visibly more relaxed for like a week. I should get him that again.

Hope you and the rest of /fa/ have happy holidays this year.

I just get my immediate family to get me CDs or books really. Small, inexpensive things that I don't desperately want or need, but are nice to have anyway. Extended family always just give me money, which is nice also, and I'll generally use that to buy clothing.
