Big fan of Yohji, not so much Y - 3. Always thought the concept was a bit too awkward for me and never really liked anything from them.

It irks me a bit to hear this but it probably won't have any negative effect on Yohji, all you Yohi fans can keep doing your thing, Y - 3 wasn't really closely associated with Yohji's image or whatever anyway

But the thing is though... I completely fail to understand WHY they couldn't just do Adidas x Kanye West I mean more people know about Adidas than Y - 3, and Y - 3 is already a collaboration with Yohji... What the fuck?

When a motherfucker is threatening you, you should have the right to blow a hole in them.

Like when that Trayvon Martin shit happened, all of a sudden their were countless black people who didn't understand the stand your ground law. But as a black person, I knew damn well through talking years and years with other black people, they love the idea of something like stand your ground because "If somebody come in my house, Ima kill em" type shit.

No all of a sudden stand your ground is a bad thing. Bullshit. I plan on legally buying a gun, hitting the range, and learning how to use it and what the law is in my state. Because if they fuck with me (hoodlum pieces of shit) I reserve the right to shoot them.

also building off this, Y-3 getting more exposure is great, it means more and more people will buy and more and more money for yamamoto, which is especially important for conserving the mainline and offering him near-full creative freedom in his role as designer
same shit with the edwin collab, you can bitch all you want, but if it's putting money in yohji's pocketbook and helping him stay out of bankcrupcy, that's fucking fantastic
>>7285886
Yohji has fucked with Adidas way before Y-3
he's done tons of collabs with adidas outside of Y-3, and Yohji himself has worn adidas for years

I think we're disagreeing on a fundamental point.

I get where you're coming from, but you're dismissing what I'm saying as merely elitist.

I've said this before. Yohji makes clothes for people who have experienced and expressed themselves, they're for people who are beyond experimenting. But if you think what I just said means

No, that's not what I think you're saying, when you say
>Yohji makes clothes for people who have experienced and expressed themselves, they're for people who are beyond experimenting
I think that's wrong
Like I said, they're fucking clothes, you don't need to subscribe to the idea of a timeless style or anything else that. Yohji makes fashion. It's not reserved for an exclusive clientele, like you said, one that is certain in what they're wearing, and more often than not only hold truck by Yamamoto's theories about consumer culture and fashion
I fucking love yamamoto, but there's no barrier that exists in wearing clothes other than the monetary ones; if people find self-expression in wearing yohji or are just comfortable in it, that's cool with me
what you're putting forward is some fucking SZ-tier elitism, which is p. shitty considering you're usually such a chill dude

Afaik Edwin collab was announced but was cancelled or something and never happened. Also there are a handful of Yohji x Adidas projects (Separate of Y3) and iirc Y3 came to be because Yohji wanted to use stripes or something and asked for Adidas's permission but they proposed Y3? Don't remember someone refresh me on this

>> No.7285960

>>7285909
I've got Yohji's first collab pieces with Adidas and the 10th anniversary edition stuff, those were actually designed by him and they're great.

Your argument about the financial freedom the collab offers is fine, but it's counter intuitive.

It's more that it's a financial obligation as a huge part of the reason why Y-3 continued was due to Yohji having the financial NEED to do so after the GFC. He didn't sign on for creative endeavours, it was a means to survive... and frankly the new moneymen in Yohji Inc. insisted upon it.

Again, Yohji isn't a day to day force in Y-3.

>> No.7285983

lol, for someone who's espousing a universal view on fashion you're sure not very tolerant on other's perspectives.

I've tried to read through that post, but I think your emotions got the better of it and it's a bit too much of a ramble for me to get.

>>Yohji makes fashion. It's not reserved for an exclusive clientele, like you said, one that is certain in what they're wearing, and more often than not only hold truck by Yamamoto's theories about consumer culture and fashion

Could you just explain that bit for me? I feel like there's a great point in there, but the weirdly places commas is throwing me off when I read it.

>> No.7286036

Du I think you misunderstand me
I'm saying Y-3 putting food on the table for yohji means he can continue on having full creative freedom with the mainline, which is what I meant when I said
> important for conserving the mainline and offering him near-full creative freedom in his role as designer
It's stuff like Y-3 that is keeping him from almost teetering into bankruptcy again
Wish Y's for men would come back tho ;_;

That's pretty cool about the adidas tho, are they the "Endorsed by Yohji Yamamoto" ones with Yohji on the tongue? Those are dope.
Also dig the current Y's x Adidas ones, I might pick them up next time I'm paid, because I need some basic white sneaks
>>7285983
Sorry idk I just really hate the SZ intelligentsia view of fashion that's so elitist, total bummber
Uh, sorry, I'm not very eloquent, but I'll try to explain

What I mean is that Yohji is a very intelligent person and has put forward some really interesting critiques of consumer culture and fast-fashion, but you see a lot of people espoused what he's saying blindly with no consideration of what it means.
When he says "I Hate Fashion", you can't take that at face value.
And so you get all these people being stupid about it - Yohji transcends trends, Yohji transcends fashion, it's timeless, it's yada-yada-yada. Yohji's human, just like anyone else: yes he's an amazing designer and far more emotionally invested in his work than almost anyone I can think of, and that's why his collections are always so cohesive, but threads weave in and out, trends do appear and disappear in his work.
I respect the people willing to acknowledge this and wanting to experiment with Yamamoto's creations and recontextualizing them in interesting ways that speaks about them as an individual, not adopting this bullshit literalism and just trying to nail runway looks and put no real thought into what they're wearing because it's fucking "timeless"

>> No.7286142

>>7286036
Oh, having adidas' money would definitely help Yohji Inc's bottom line and it's probably fucking awesome because it's essentially licensing his name but there's almost no cost involved for Yohji. It would be interesting to read the contract since with Adidas pursuing so many high profile collabs as of late, i wonder what effect it could have on Yohji.

I don't like SZ either, the stuff I've read there just make me shake my head so much. Their view isn't even elitist, it's just cuntish. Not to mention their ridiculously moderated forums.

What you're saying about Yohji is thoughtful and well considered, I also agree with it.

So what were the issues you had with that I said? I couldn't find it in what you wrote there.

Bruv, I don't mind if you do have beef with me lol. As long as we can still have good discussion and I can feel like I'm not wasting time replying it's great :)

I probably should explain what I mean a bit more.

I don't agree with the view that ANYONE can put on Yohji and pull it off. That is becoming more and more the prevalent view on a lot of forums. Just check Styleforums' thread, the vast majority of the people posting there look absolutely fucking terrible. But they think because they can hide behind the fog of "self expression"and "enjoyment in Yohji" that they can get away with it.

My point was that the average person needs to make a fuck load of fashion mistakes and have learned from those mistakes to be able have that self assurance to pull off an average yohji runway fit.

That isn't a SZ-tier view, if they've highjacked it then so be it. But the point stands, you've gotta work your way up to the big leagues.
