What's the difference between acrylic, mineral, and sapphire crystals?
Would you like to...
Print this pagePrint this page
Add to favoritesAdd to favorites

An acrylic watch crystal (i.e. the see-through window above the dial) is a kind of hardened plastic, which has the advantage of being resistant to shattering, but can be scratched easily. Fortunately, scratches can be easily removed from acrylic.

Mineral crystal is a kind of hardened glass (similar to what is used in office buildings), which is much more scratch resistant than acrylic, but less than sapphire. Mineral crystals are also somewhat better at shatter resistance compared with sapphire, especially in those cases where the crystal is domed.

A sapphire crystal is indeed made of synthetic sapphire, which is a transparent form of corundum, or aluminum oxide (Al2O3). It is extremely hard (Moh's scale 9), and will resist scratching by most substances short of diamonds. However, if struck sharply and from the correct direction, sapphire will shatter, especially if domed.

>> No.7277160

>>7277119
Worth mentioning that eventhough lot of people seem to think so, a sapphire crystal is not objectively better than mineral or even acrylic.

Some prefer mineral for this sort of subtle smokiness, warmness that is hard to explain. Also the fact that it doesn't shatter makes it better for rough conditions than sapphire. Scratches won't kill your watch but losing the sapphire will.

I'm gonna catch shit for this, but this is my watch. Most awesome time piece I've ever owned.

>> No.7280104

Are you looking for a dial with a more military aesthetic? The Timex Weekender and the Nato Seiko 5s have that kind of appeal.

I'm bored right now, so I am willing to help a /fa/ggot out.

Yeah, I suppose I should have specified. I don't like watches with a lot going on, so I am a huge fan of military style because of the extremely militant design. The thing that caught my eye over the seiko when it came to those timex's is the fact that it was just so simple and nice.

Yeah. I hate it when some quartz watches tick loudly while playing games or whatever on the computer without headphones.

>>7280165
I'm not this anon. But I also have my cheap desktop floorspeakers playing the radio while on low volume when sleeping. Since it's only ambient and not loud. With the bass level maxed plus the treble/talk kept very low while I sleep due to my rabbits making noises cause I keep them in the same room I sleep in.

>inb4 lepai amp
I don't need a dearer amp since this is good enough for the poor unemployed budget.

Listening to music while sleeping is wasting electricity and autistic if it's very loud. But I like it anyway since it's coming from my pc anyway which is left on most of the time.

Too much money, More than you can afford pal.

The only watch that's low-luxury tier in your links is that Tissot and it's a PVD plated gold quartz chronograph at around the $300-400 price.

https://www.google.com/search?q=tissot+tradition+classic+gold

The others you linked cost $2k, $5k and so on. Some contain white/yellow gold precious metals in them.

Most of those are luxury timepieces. They're luxury for a reason be it collecting or possessing a nice watch to keep.

You don't need to buy a luxury tier watch if you can't afford to. It's up to you if you want to spend real moneys on a fake non-precious metal, asian movement replica if need be but they should be bought with replica printed money.
