Let's have a techwear thread.

Post inspo, questions, guides, w/e.

I own a very warm parka for the coldest days and a bomber jacket for the Spring, but I'd like a good compromise to keep me really warm when it gets rainy, windy and cold (0-5 celsius).
Do you know of any brand which makes a shell with great insulation, good heat evacuation and waterproof capability, but which has a slimmer fit even if it doesn't allow for layering?

Hey, can you guys not derail two techwear threads in a row over the same fucking Aether jacket?

>any brand which makes a shell with great insulation, good heat evacuation tand waterproof capability, but which has a slimmer fit even if it doesn't allow for layering?

Pretty much all your design specifications are at odds: insulation versus heat evacuation, being waterproof versus heat evacuation, slim fit versus insulation. What are you looking to use it for?

>>7266647

>>7266760
>>7266778
The most obvious place is traditional outdoor companies: Filson, Orvis, LL Bean, Land's End. Empire Canvas Works has a unique niche I'm not really sure how to describe - they make stuff intended as performance outdoor wear, but with archaic fabrics I think you'd be demented to rely on in actually demanding conditions. But I've never tried them, and not everybody died 200 years ago...

And workwear companies. Carhartt and Dickies, of course. Duluth Trading is better at least functionally. Mountain Khakis is a sort of hybrid outdoor/workwear brand that's really good. And I don't know much about them, but Arborware is a company for tree climbers, and AFAIK they make the heaviest cotton work pants.

There's other Japanese fashion companies working in a similar space: Prps and Buzz Rickson are two off the top of my head.

>> No.7267878

All the modern outdoor companies, except Arc'Teryx, also produce some pieces with traditional inflections. You're in luck this year, because Patagonia has a bunch of reproductions of older pieces up because of some anniversary or something.

But more than copping any particular brand or piece, learn how to create and outfit combining ones for the desired effect you want. That's the key to anything.

>>7266829
There's a ton of cheap techwear out there, everything from workwear to athletic stuff, and REI's selection is surprisingly limited even with the brands it carries. Like, I had no idea what was out there when I used to rely on REI for outfitting. Nothing they sell is bad, there's just so much more out there.

Check Vespertine, other bike companies, and then there's that Raeburn jacket Meta has.

Goretex is a pretty good choice for a more lightweight and breathable hard-shell, I don't know why you'd dislike it
If you want a soft-shell, I can't really recommend anything in that category
It really depends on how much rain you'll be taking on (like if you're just using it to go from the bus stop or train stop to your place of work, soft-shell might be the better choice; if you're cycling around in the rain for hours or if you're hiking in really wet conditions, a hardshell will offer the best protection)

Also Have a ranger hoodie, the dwr coating and special fleece do an awesome job repelling water and no wind gets through whatsoever. It's also probably the warmest fleece you'll ever wear. Well maybe a patagonia r4 might be warmer but idk mayne.
