All that said, I'm kind of skeptical the idea of "having a prospective partner in the couple form you spend time with and engage in pretty much exclusive behaviors with before you get married" originated in the US in the 1920s.

Certainly changes happened, maybe the euphemism "girlfriend" came in, but you're going to have to bring a lot more than some messy shit on Wikipedia to substantiate it.
