Top laughter.

I still have mine from my awkward highschool days. That watch went through 4 years of near-quotidian HS wear, heavy use on paintball fields for "tactical reasons", and the occasional use during college. It's a tacky cheap piece of shit that isn't exactly a cheap piece of shit.

Thanks for the laugh, OP. I'm going to give that watch a good polish and a new battery.

I finally got a Seiko sports/dressy watch right now with zrc strap from shipping.

My next Affordable-level watch for the collection might be a SKX007 or a SNZF17/SNZF29. But problem is that it's the same type of automatic movement as the one in the pic.

Can someone recommend me a Diver & Sports/Sport-chronograph watch other than anything by Seiko in the same affordable price range? I need one that's original and not a homage ripoff that includes an auto movement.

"Movement" refers to the clockwork, or the mechanics of the watch. This particular movement is powered by a battery, unlike it's hand-wind or self-wind counterparts. The movement for the Timex in question is reliable, and it is dead-quiet. Automatic watches are known for their tell-tale *tick, tick, tick, tickity-tick*. But this watch is quieter than a mouse.

Also, that JCrew Weekender is worth every penny. Definitely cop that timepiece. I'd pick up a Timex over a Rolex everyday. Did you know that Timex watches are more reliable than Rolex? Now you know.

If a watch takes a battery then in basically every case it's a quartz watch, which means it has a quartz oscillator in its circuitry that measures time very accurately, but it's also incredibly cheap to produce.

This is compared to mechanical watches that need to be wound rather than taking a battery, which is less accurate and costs more, which is why it's usually reserved for higher end watches.

Rolex is not some magical company that can defy the laws of physics that wear a watch's moving parts down over time just because they charge more. Nighthawk/Skyhawk is a solid, reliable watch. People say it's busy and whatnot, but at the same time don't realize that even stylistically simple isn't inherintly something you want to pursue without further reasoning. You can even appreciate the fact it's busy, kind of techy instrument-like watch. Great to have along side of simple dress watch for example.

Also, it looks even better live. Feels really solid if you get what I mean. In different league compared to for example the staple /fa/ mechanicals like Orient Makos, Seiko 5's.

I'm into mechanical watches but I realize that there are ton of amazing quartz movements out there, from example Seiko/Grand Seiko, Citizen (A660), Breitling Superquartz and whatnot. I guess what I'm saying is that there are differences in quartz movements just like there are in mechanical movements, and I'd choose quality quartz over some cheap Chinese mechanical anyday, or HEQ like Seiko 9F or Citizen A660 over your standard ETA mechanical they use in 2k$ Tudors etc.

>because i honestly dont know, what makes one quartz better than another?

This is common with watch newbies who have have read from some random menswear guide that mechanical=le classy and quartz=BAD without further reasoning

World of HEQ/HAQ (high end quartz, high accuracy quartz) is pretty fascinating, but is mostly appreciated in West by the more well-informed watch people. In Japan they are more common and more appreciated.

Conventional quartz movement accurate to +-15-20/s per month, where has HEQ like 9F does 20s per YEAR, not to mention A660 who is rated to 5s per year. These are movements that don't update their timekeeping externally via radio signal or anything at any point. Also note that these movements are found in watches as low as 1k USD$ category, where as mechanical equivalent in same price range commonly use 40$ bulk ETA2824 or Miyota 9015 or similar, with very little "prestige" or finishing.

Here are some info about the 9F and the technologies it uses, it's quite different to standard quartz you find in a 40$ Fossil

http://www.grand-seiko.com/manufacture/9f-quartz.html

There there are other quartz based technologies like Springdrive which again is totally different animal, incredibly impressive nevertheless.

Ps. I am mechanical guy, I "get" them. Just incase someone labels me as hater. I have four mechanical watches and one quartz which isn't even HEQ. I am however looking for good deal on Citizen Chronomaster as we speak.

watches usually have one purpose, and using a watch to tell time is outmoded. therefore, it is safe to say that watches are obsolete.

unless, you're an athlete or in the forest, wearing a watch is tantamount to a hipster buying an address book, sure it's cute, but it has no value. value can only be derived from it because it is jewelry.
