It's not really an American thing, but instead an ease of naming thing. The model that Ray-Ban makes is called the Shooter because of the "vanity bullet hole", so I call them Shooters in the same way that Wayfarers are Wayfarers and Clubmasters are more widely known than generic "browline" glasses. It's not perfect, but it helps with ease of recognizing (sun)glasses.
