There was a thread like this yesterday but it died out. Basically, other than practicing how can I improve on drawing fashion related things. Is there a book on this that you guys can recommend. Any tutorials?? I'm pretty bad but enjoy it anyway so help me out. Thx

ninehead media books are fine
id scan mine but theyre like a million pages a piece and i don't want to disassemble them

its not necessary to get a fashion illustration book tho unless u want to do fashion illustrations, though they do have better coverage of how to draw garments than most general illustration books.

Go to /ic/ and read the sticky.

You need to study lots of anatomy and practice drawing from the model before you can dive into clothing. Making the weight and texture of clothing look convincing in a drawing is really hard, and you need a solid anatomical foundation to build upon.

I don't understand how people can design things. Like, how do you do it? Everything I draw is so uninspired. What do you do? Look at a fuckton of inspiration?

You have to look for inspiration outside of fashion itself.

Get books on architecture, biology, astronomy, film, graphic design, photography. Study everything. Cultivate a lifestyle of visual appreciation. Build mood boards. Assemble all the images that resonate with you. Scan strange things from old books in the library. Learn Photoshop. Take nude model drawing classes, they are often really cheap at local community art centers or colleges.

ew that would feel so creepy to wear.
I've said a million times that defense is my fave thing ever though!
On the bio side, I gravitate more towards the nautilus. I love sea creatures and the spiral of a shell is so beautiful. More for accessories, can't really make silhouettes that match lol.

pay attention to how designers do it, particularly the way they riff on a single block.

eg most of rick's leathers are built on just one block, and the only thing that changes is the front panelling and closure. on the women's he'll also riff on the sleeves or add panels into the back. go to a webstore that has good, high quality pics from a lot of angles and compare multiple iterations of a jacket to see how he's cut open, removed, or added panels.

Also everything that meta said was spot on, for the most part. Of you follow the right path you will be able to transcribe everything in the world into clothing.
You will be able to look at paintings, the interior of a coffee shop, wildlife Etc and be able to extract silhouettes, color palates etc. it's like playing with Legos.

Then you will see that the real difficulty is not creation, but figuring out what's worth creating. What's original? What does the world need?

I think if you study basic anatomy your sketches will become a lot better. Here is kinda how I start out most of my sketches.

working on texture, colours and understanding how fabric folds is really important for fashion drawing.

practice is the most important step, but dont take it to seriously, you have to think it is fun, else there is no point.

That one looks nice, so sleek!

Also yeah twerk has got the right idea, you need to remove all hints that make your piece referential. Part of how all that " good artists steal and make their own" works.

Tommy B talked about something that pertains to this. He said that he looks down upon mood boards and basically anything that is used as an instrument to carry on visual attachments, so to speak. He said he prefers to see a source of inspiration ( an outfit, etc) and let the critical features stand out and resonate within him, instead of analyzing it multiple times and extracting every bit of potency it has.
