Chelsea's are available from any decent shoemaker, and too many bad makers too.

Each of the good english shoemakers have chelseas: trickers, C&J, even Loake.

Australians still make one decent thing and that's RM Williams chelseas.
Depending on the exchange rate, perhaps they'll be the best bang for the buck, as it were. They're not cheap, but they're pretty damn good considering the price compared to the English makes.

That is true: on each tab there's the brand name and the address so you know where to send them for a resole.

It's not particularly noticeable, since they're usually covered by pants anyway, and only country girls and labourers wear these kinds of boots with shorts.

What I like about many other chelsea makers is that they have just one tab at the back (the plaster their brand on that one tab too). I'm unconvinced that two tabs are really necessary.

Looking at the rm's catalog there's a kind of heel that's inbetween cuban and flat called the block heal.

I don't think I could ever go full cuban, but the block heal is perhaps doable as it's just not as high. Historically it actually had a use as all these boots would've been blocks originally so that the boot locked in securely into a stirrup.

It's true that they have the country connotations, however there is another group that wears them and that's urban old money types - usually own a "hobby farm" or some such bullshit.

I went to a private out in the country (well, sort of). And it was the old money farmers (those squatter families) kids that wore RM's. They were really proud of them too, and would show the off to each other. A friend of mine had a beat up pair of the buckle stockman's in black kangaroo. He was mighty proud of them, and all the other bumpkins fawned - in their own way.

The city kids wore the usual junk (cept for the few "hobby farmers/fake bumpkin" types I mentioned).

Looking back at it, I can't help but think the farmer kids had it right. Sure beats the made in chinois nikes, NB's and all that other crap the rest of us had, despite all the spoiling and trustfunds etc.

Another Australian company that's a less expensive alternative to the RM's is Baxter.

They are wholecuts too, so join that club of relative rarity in the Chelsea making world.

about 100 bucks less than RM's.

The last perhaps isn't as attractive as their more well known cousin, but they're still made in australia, wholecut chelseas. The leather is of a different quality too. Not as fine, but good enough for a casual boot.

Here's my Baxter's Henry Baxter's next to my RM's "Comfort" Craftsman in walnut and chestnut respectively.

I've worn the RM's to shit over the past couple of years. Baxters haven't been worn as often. Still fond of them both.

The B's were as I said cheaper, and that's reflected in what you get. It's not bad, it's just not to the same standard as the RMs.

I prefer the browns to the blacks, though these have been darkened a little more via the use of saddle dressing and conditioner.

I have a black pair of craftsmans but I don't wear those casually. Just don't have a fit that they go with.

although the rm williams is not that good looking, some classic beatle boot from the uk would be much better.

At least with these I know what sort of quality to expect (US made), as who knows where CH have their shoes made after nike was done with them.

To be honest looking at the rm williams in this thread I'd be inclined to recommend those. There's something about that whole cut style. Still, they cost more, and the english makers cost even more.

And they're not even wholecut. Really though, does that even matter so much? Double the price but are they double the shoe? Have to go for a fitting I guess.

Yeah, I kinda like the cap toe of the IR's...

>>7078597
A question for you though: Does the toe section have some kind of inner hard cap like the craftsmans or turnouts?

And, concerning sizing, have you had any difficulties with the rounded toe of the riggers compared to say the craftsmans? Less room? More room?

If they fit just like turnouts that's okay and I know what size to get. This "tanami style" toe business confused me.

>> No.7078670

>>7078658
They fit just the same, at least they did for me. My craftsman are more roomy but they're a size wider, and I tend to wear them more in summer because of the extra air-ing room. They have an inside toecap, barely noticeable from looking outside.
I suggest if you get the RMs to get the comfort sole too - it's lighter, more durable and more comfortable for the loss of a little sleakness.

They're pretty different. But if the boots are dark anyway it won't really matter. I personally prefer the chisel toe; makes them stand out somewhat from the round toe chelsea of the common labourer which is pretty much the standard downndirty boot in australia, of which I have a pair, but they're not something I wear casually and reserve for yard work etc. I've come to associate that round shape with work boots. However, it's a stigma that is specifically australian and shouldn't matter at all in america.

That being said, if you like them and the price is right go for it. It'll give you a taste to see if it may be worth paying more later for other pairs.

Thanks.
I was wondering about the innersole. Comfort or leather? I tried the comfort type craftsmans in store and have to say that they were much more comfy than the traditional leather insole.
I wonder how durable that inner sock thing is though?
You going to keep that look on the riggers? Or are you considering polishing them?

Rubber sole, comfort insole* is what I meant. I think they come together, but yeah - comfort insole is the go (for riggers at least).

They come together standard, but don't have to. Basically, you can have any combination of insole/outsole.
Cept perhaps with the screwed soles.
Think they come with a leather insole only but could be wrong.
That's what I like about RMW! So many possible customisations for a reasonable price.
Thanks for the info, it's rare since there doesn't appear to be much talk about them anywhere so it's hard to get good info.

Can chelsea boots be used as winter boots? Obviously not in a snow storm, but can they survive some slush and such?

>> No.7078765

>>7078760
Yep. Mine lasted through snowy Belgian winter. I would suggest wiping them down after going through the salty slush from roadsides because the salt can stuff up the leather a fair bit, but otherwise quite well. The leather soles can be slippery too, I'd suggest the rubber soles as an alternative.

>> No.7078807

>>7078760
Depends on the make and model really. Some leathers, if untreated or even if treated may not be so suitable for getting wet. Same with soles. A rubber or synthetic sole is going to hold up much better than leather. When leather soles get wet they will wear 10 times faster or something , particularly on concrete and roads. A stormwelt would ensure some form of waterproofing. This goes for all leather shoes ro be honest. Generally, this goes for all "dressing" shoes.

sorry, meant "dressier" shoes. god damn tablet autocorrect.
Basically, if the shoe doesn't look like it's made for rough and tumble use in the wild elements, it's perhaps preferable to not use it thusly. You can, but there's a reason why such hardy/over-engineered shoes are made.

>> No.7079091

>>7078638
Nah, don't order them from some tightarse ebay seller. Try one of the official retailers. Like what was mentioned above, there's one or two of them that can be persuaded to *ahem, state that the boots are seconds or something and perhaps declare a value not equal to the value one actually paid for the boots. Might help with them taxes. You'll never know if you don't ask.

On this, I've never encountered more tightarse/overly cautious sellers than those in the US. Must be that customs etc., is much more scrutinised or something? Can't be as bad as say, Germany. Brits and Aussies are pretty laid back in regards to declared value, if asked. They want to get the product to you, after all.

Just a thought.
