Techwear

Do you love it? Hate it? Personally it's the thing that enamoured me to /fa/, I can't stand clothing that's not functional.

sure; techwear emphasizes modern materials and you can even buy $40 running jackets if you want. imo just like the rest of fashion there's not really a minimum you have to spend.

that being said

1. by its nature techy stuff tends to be more expensive than if it was made from traditional materials

2. maybe some people who know more than me will say that there are certain characteristics of the cut and fit of a piece that define techwear can't be found for less than $300. I'm not sure I would agree but I'd like to hear more about this regardless.

it didn't

the functionality and practicality of techwear is mostly a pretense. like all fashion it's primarily visual. it's about conveying a message or creating an aesthetic. that's not to say that it can't be functional, but it's not really the focus even if acronym, etc. like to pretend that it is when they advertise.

that was kind of my point, i guess I needed to layer on the sarcasm a little heavier. The idea that the majority of this aesthetic is legitimized by it someone being more "fuctional" is of course wrong, but it makes great ads. I was attempting to show that I'm rocking some of the top-tier brands of technical clothing, in the situations they were designed for, and how different that looks than the tactical techwear man-pris and some extranious buckles placed here and there.

Is actually pulling off a face wrap correctly, granted it's while snowboarding, but the general idea is spot on. Masks are really situational, in some circumstances you're either going to look like you're about to rob someone, and in others you'll just look goofy as fuck... the mask is the one part of the look that you really gotta own hard before you wear it.

The difference between just technical clothing and "techwear" has a lot to do with attitude. Unlike the other guy, I don't think it's "mostly a pretense" (certainly I use the shit out of my stuff) but generally it's not going to be "the most technical clothing evar," either, because that's got nothing to do with designing a fit for a situation.

I look at it as clothing that helps you do whatever you're doing instead of getting in the way, *and that reflects that in its aesthetic*. Clothing for human endeavor and accomplishment, clothing for being human in.

A few universal key words: active, curious, focused, spare, anatomic, clothes as an extension of the body and mind, engaged.

There's also a general aversion to branding unless it's used creatively and/or it's some fuckfamous outdoor brand that's a signifier in its own right, and even then.

I'll post more later. I have to run, as in go, not as in Gyakusou.

For me, techwear is all about mixing fuction with form. The materials are a hell of a lot more functional than standard cloth, and the shape and use of the pieces reflect the activities and environments they're used in. This doesn't mean "sacrificing all style for form", otherwise techwear would just be people walking around in plastic sacs covered in pockets.

Techwear also brings with it an aesthetic that I appreciate, apart from the function of the clothes - there's the bit I mentioned above, but I enjoy the shapes and silhouettes that are made by the clothing. Check out a lot of the pictures to see what I mean. The styling, in addition, is very modern - I generally like my techwear to be very minimalist, and honestly, I've always been a bit of a cyberpunk nerd, so there's that too.

Basically what I'm trying to say is the idea isn't "ALL NON FUNCTIONAL IDEAS MUST DIE", but that ideas should be guided by function.

The whole shorts over leggings thing just creates a distinct look imo. But on top of that, tons of runners wear shorts over leggings, so I have no idea what you mean when you say it's highly impractical.

get a pair of decent, thermal tights instead of picking up whatever flimsy "leggings" you can find
having tights which are so shitty and/or inappropriate for the season is the only excuse one has to wear shorts over them as they may need protection from the cold and wind, but this only excuses doing it as a desperate poorfag or someone working on short notice, it doesn't excuse doing it on purpose and routinely

>it does nothing that pants wouldn't do

>it's the same as wearing a shirt with short sleeves over another with long ones

Both these are functional.

Leggings alone = great range of motion, breathability, and wicking, but no pockets.

Shorts alone = Nothing covering your lower leg, which is fine in summer, but not in cooler weather. And no wicking.

Pants alone = No breathabiliy, and I'm not aware of too many current pants that are both wicking and have ample pockets. The Gyakusou pants would satisfy all this, but they're a thin poly that'd have poor abrasion resistance.

T-Shirt over long sleeve shirt? At its most basic, it's just like wearing a vest, warmth for your core while letting your arms breathe and sweat.

A lot of this has to do with compensating for deficiencies in what's out there. Like, I wear merino baselayers, but a lot of packs will beat up the fabric in the shoulders. Solution? Put on a thin tee in a more durable fabric. If someone made it, a merino baselayer with thick nylon or leather shoulder padding (like those old shooting garments) would work, but no one does.

For pants, even most techwear pants don't wick, unfortunately. Most of Outlier's do, but they don't produce any cargo styles. Something like >>7031326, Acronym shorts (none of which are made in wicking fabrics IIRC) over running tights, offer better wicking function (the tights being 100% merino or poly, instead of like 20% poly like Outlier pants) and loads more and better pocketing than Outlier's pants.

Then, function isn't just the technical properties of the fabric. It's social - it's not that people are "afraid of looking like fairies" or whatever it was you said, but that there are situations where it's more functional not to look like a fairy, whether you meant the mythological or sexual kind, I'm not sure.

And then there's simply that people dress to create and communicate their selves, something that's a real necessity in our society, especially in the great cities. Personally, the appeal for me of the shorts-tights combo is how it's typically coded as feminine (or, you know, playful, "frivolous") and is a relatively simple, functional way to distort or complicate the gender signal from my outfit.

were i going to say it's "just like" anything, i'd say it's just like wearing a jacket with short sleeves over a shirt with long sleeves which is no less retarded than wearing the shirt with short sleeves over it

does anyone have techfits involving jackets with short or cropped sleeves over shirts with long sleeves?

>The Gyakusou pants would satisfy all this, but they're a thin poly that'd have poor abrasion resistance.
what are you getting abraded by while running? i'm under the impression that most of this stuff is marketed towards people exercising in somewhat urban environments rather than those that like to blaze trails in dense forests

>A lot of this has to do with compensating for deficiencies in what's out there.
honestly, i think it just has to do with liking the way it looks and the desire to rationalize one's liking

>Solution?
i'd like to know why it's a problem first
i appreciate your example, but it's a little vague

are you talking about stacking a short-sleeved tee on top of the first which is long-sleeved, or are you just talking about stacking two tees with similar sleeves?

do you have photos that could demonstrate the problem and how this fixes it?

>Then, function isn't just the technical properties of the fabric.
>It's social
slippery slope, here we come!

>it's not that people are "afraid of looking like fairies" or whatever it was you said, but that there are situations where it's more functional not to look like a fairy
>there are situations where it's less stressful to adopt an embraced trend

>whether you meant the mythological or sexual kind, I'm not sure.
fairies are gay men who are particularly camp, right?

>Personally, the appeal for me of the shorts-tights combo is how it's typically coded as feminine (or, you know, playful, "frivolous") and is a relatively simple, functional way to distort or complicate the gender signal from my outfit.
i don't even know what to say when you're this concerned with your "gender signal" lol

these functions are getting flimsier and flimsier

The functions are flimsy because, as was pointed above, techwear is also about aesthetics. This thing is more about aesthetics than use - yeah, it has some benefits (a bit of warmth, pockets, etc) but the main function is *not walking around in tights* and *creating a cohesive silhouette*. The reason these functions are flimsy is because you're on this autistic crusade to show us all how if something isn't 100% function related, it's dumb.

What are you getting out of this? This is the stupidest fucking argument.

Yeah, and those are probably 90% cotton 10% spandex, with no gussets and shitty closures on the pockets. I'd be shocked if those were technical at all. Also, they and most of the results from "cargo leggings" aren't true cargo bottoms: they just have two pockets, who cares if they're flap pockets on the thigh?

And, "cargo leggings mens" turns up a bunch of BDU pants.

Anyway, this is all pointless. What you can't seem to get is that people aren't after a "pretense" to function, they're after a unity between form, function, and some set of ideals and aspirations about life and humans and stuff. Frankly, talking about them split at all is a silly and basic artifact of the old Western, err, pretense to being able to abstractly dissect the world into little thought modules and atomized, nonsocial individuals.

You might say it's silly and people do it to look less silly, but what are people except silly? Fuck, I'm a cismale and I like the socially ordained feminine vibe it has, what's silly if not that? But I like it, and I like how it pushes me away from some of the negative aspects of the masculine social heritage handed to me, like this dopey, dull obsession with Not Being "Frivolous" or "Silly."

Pic is Boston City Hall, a masterpiece of Brutalist architecture. It's not some "functional" shipping container with windows, but every little jag and jut is designed to facilitate and articulate the functioning of the city government in harmony with certain ideals of mid-20th-century urban representative democracy. Plenty of writeups on the 'net you can Google if you want details.

>i'd like to know why it's a problem first
I do want to briefly cover this, though, for general reference. A lot of really tough nylon fabrics you build bags out of will abrade wool pretty badly, make it pill and wear down. So when I'm wearing a wool baselayer and I'm going to be schlepping a pack that might do that for a while, I'll throw on another shirt in a tougher fabric to protect it. This is, frequently, especially in the summer, a long sleeve baselayer tee under a cotton tee.

I also appreciate being able to add another design element to fits and the sort of slacker-'90s-turned-person-on-a-mission vibe of it.

>>7032553
>Hell yes, great post. It's within that twist that a certain kind of magic happens.

Thanks!

Personally, I'm all about twisting up basic pieces and fits, one to keep it interesting for me, and two to hopefully look interesting and hit that magic.

Tyvek is that shit they wrap unfinished buildings in and make those flat rate envelopes out of. It's tough, waterproof, and apparently at least a little breathable, but I don't know how this compares to anything else:

No - I've seen multiple other posters insist the same, that this specific outfit is part function and mostly style, and you've responded by saying "well im not going to talk about style."

OF COURSE the discussion focuses on arguments for function when you kept saying you only wanted arguments for their function.

This is stupid and useless. You don't like something, cool beans. Again, it's mainly a style choice with some benefits to function - you don't like that style, good for you.
