hey /fa/, just copped a pair of 1000 miles and a pair of timberland katahdin iron works. these are my first real boots and I'd like to last as long as possible, how should apply the various obenaufs leather care products? I've got leather oil, water shield, and heavy duty LP. i'm going to use the timberlands during the snowfall, the wolverines for casual.

Don't use Obenaufs LP. As the name suggests it's way too heavy duty protector for a boot you will propably just use as a everyday shoe in urban environment. Just stick with the leather oil, apply with old sock onto cleaned boot every couple of months. Twice or three times per year is plenty enough.

What you have to understand is that while the info in that image is correct, it applies to modern hiking boots, which have very different properties from something like a Wolverine 1000 mile, which deliberately imitates a century-old design for purely aesthetic rather than functional reasons. The leathers found in modern utility boots are not comparable to the Chromexel and other fashion leathers used in fashion boots such as 1Ks (And, they can take a beating, but they are undeniably fashion boots). Sno Seal has gone out of favor with some professionals in the past few decades because the chemical properties of the leather used in purpose build work boots have changed as treatment methods evolved to make it more durable, it often doesn't react to heat quite the same as it used to, and Sno Seal, a product designed with 1930s boot technology in mind, can sometimes have unexpected effects. The biggest modern issue which Dave Page is referring too is that Sno Seal prevents just about any adhesive from sticking to leather, which complicates things when trying to resole a boot with a glued on sole.

However, 1Ks do not have a glued on sole. It's a non issue. To reiterate, 1Ks are designed to imitate the feel and most importantly the look of an early 20th century boot. That goes hand in hand with the treatment they are meant to receive. You want a vintage look, use vintage product. Sno Seal, Obenauf's, and other wax based preservatives will weatherproof 1Ks just as well as they did workboots 70 years ago. They may be technologically obsolete, but remember, so are all-leather boots. That's not the point.

>As the name suggests it's way too heavy duty protector for a boot you will probably just use as a everyday shoe in urban environment.

Some cities get rain and snow. If you're not babying your boots then you shouldn't let that stop you. However if you don't treat them properly beforehand you'll quickly find yourself with soaked feet and a rotten upper. Real wear does not happen in one season, it happens over many. For the boot to survive long enough to reach its full potential, it needs to be properly cared for. Suggesting otherwise is just stupid.

With no care at all, your boots will end up split in half long before they can look like this.

There is difference between preservaties and protectors. You are suggesting using heavy duty protectors, based on the false assumption that the leather (when cared for regularly with preservatives unlike the IR in your pic) needs additional protection against rain, snow or slush.

Some people think they look ugly, I think they look great. They have enough cultural/historical context where I live (vt) that people are used to the look. Which is good, because they can be a little shocking to those whove never seen them.

They're really fucking good for wet weather (snow/slush/rain/mud) and pretty good on ice, about as good as you can get without seriously sacrificing looks, or attaching spikes.

plus llbean has a ridiculously good return policy. People have worn them for 30 years, returned them beaten to shit, and gotten a brand new pair for 20-30 buck or even free.
