Are custom taxes still a huge problem when ordering clothes online? (I'm Canadian)

I usually have my stuff sent to a friend living in the U.S but this method is starting to get kind of annoying. I haven't had clothes from a non asian (they're the only ones cool enough to lie and say it's a gift @ customs) place directly sent to me in years. Is there still no way to avoid them

depends who ships.
If it's USPS or Canada Post then no, duties aren't a prob

however if its UPS or DHL be prepared to bend over and get fucked in the ass by duties.

>ordered raf holos on sale from belgium for $220
>pay $160 in duties

You can get nailed for customs by usps too. Got hit with $40 from bonobos.

it's all good dude. Just trying to keep the info for OP truthful.
I had a lot of experience in paying fuck tons of duties until I realized the rules.

pay VAT = no duties
sometimes sites have the option to not pay the VATS and take your chances on the duties. This is risky.

Most things from Canadian retailers shipped via Canada Post, euro made or not will NOT yield duties strictly because Canada Post is very lazy (and shipping within Canada does not require a customs form). This is the same for USPS, although you have a higher chance of paying duties obviously because it is coming from outside of Canada (and it requires a custom form).

SSENSE - never (I'm from Toronto if that matters)

Mr.Porter, go right up to the point where you check out. It will tell you in the total if there is VAT taxes included or not.
