The G-star jacket is quilted nylon. I found it on ebay and the model name is 'Recolite'. There's also an off-white and a blue version in cotton - they are currently for sale on a website called piperlime. They can both be had for under $100. I'm wearing a Medium in the fit.
The off white and blue versions have minimal external branding - it took me about 8 minutes with a seam ripper. The nylon version has no external branding whatsoever. They're worth the time because a lot of their styling mimics EVA suits or otherwise fits the look and they seem to be of decent manufacture.
Pants in that fit are Pic Related, and can be had at Traffic LA. They are not cheap ($225), but you could also probably try the RLX space cargos ($60-145 at Ralphlauren.com) or pick up any number of similar garments from other designers. Like you said, half the fun is finding weird things and making them work.

It doesn't have to be an insanely expensive look to pursue.

Very positive from strangers, and the look seems to go over big with the streetwear crowd and the sneakerheads.

I was looking through Ralph Lauren's site the other day, and I've got to wonder what kind of awesome is going on internally. Like, they're selling vintage military styled ripstop cargos under their mainline label, and bright orange "climbing pants" with D-Rings and more pockets than Patagonia. It's not like they're this out there in most other product offerings, or it doesn't seem that way from a glance through.

Besides just being beautifully, hilariously written, and covering other important history, I think it's the first really satisfying literary response to the Trade Center attack. The only other big art ones I can think of being Ruff JPEGs, partially, and Steve Reich's "WTC 9/11," and both of them were actually eyewitnesses. Pynchon, of course, who knows?

A few things to think about:

1) Everyone loves layering, everyone is annoyed with having to construct a single-layer fit sometimes, welcome to 2013.

2) Think about the context. It's cold in space. Why waste power on more heating than you have to?

3) Jackets are practical. Beyond the basic "carrying shit" aspect, poet had this great post one time about how impractical bags would be in reduced gravity.

But say you're, like, some kind of worker on a desert colony, or you're crew on something running without a jacket for some reason. Consider any of the famous cargos with a simple wool baselayer tee, like think >>6989141 with

Honestly, I don't think there would be. Why would there be? We're talking functional garments from an austere future. Flip the way shit buttons and have some skirts (& leggings, probably) if you like. Figure hugging jumpsuits. Put 'em on people with cocks, too, if you like.

A good deal of it is unisex to begin with, although there are certainly flight-themed cargos cut for women out there (J Brand's Earhardt comes to mind) and many hybrid boots come in women's sizes.
That said, I think simply shrugging off traditional gender tropes altogether would be a good idea. In a colony or maritime setting everyone pulls their own weight.
I'll dig up more women's variants for the future. I'm convinced there's a whole world of garments out there that would work.

A bit of advice to anyone looking for nice lower-cost kicks for this look - the safest bet right now seems to be boot/sneaker hybrids. Get on Ebay and look up older Nike ACG boots, mids and highs. They're relatively inexpensive, a lot of them are pretty dope and I can guarantee that most folks have never even heard of them, let alone owned a pair. Some of them are 90's as all get out.

>>6992087
I think meta runs one, I don't remember the name. For the most part we're all just working this out as we go along. At the risk of sounding corny, use your heart and feel your way through it. I know that MA-1, don't cop it, it's terrible unless you plan on doing something weird with it, like... gutting all the insulation out of it and burying it over the winter. Otherwise you're clearly headed in the right direction. I'd go for a grey bag but that's just me.
Also, I'm just one dude, my opinion is overrated and what makes this style is your interpretation of it, not mine.
Make sure the fit on the cargos is good, you want them to harken to military without fitting or looking directly like military.

>>6992389
Potential, depends on how you style it. Tan or olive pants, maybe a slate blue/grey.

I don't know camo patterns well and my Google-fu is failing me on figuring out what this is?

Unfortunately, the DSS only comes in that one color, it was sort of an experimental flagship piece from the S/S 12. I think their plan is to trickle things down from it, so we'll see when they drop F/W 13 and S/S 14.

Same with my current wardrobe; it's like a neutered goofninja with long shirts, drop croth and geos but no man skirts and capes. Sometimes I wish I could really go all out though.

I'm still not sure about the stark contrast between the black and the khaki though, I feel as if there's enough colour blocking going on with the gray. I guess I'll have to wait till the stuff arrives to say for sure though.

Engineer style boots seem very natural to any kind of ship/station crew fit. Color palette is completely wrong, but consider the way they were used in the costume design for the last Star Trek movie.

Switch the shiny print crew necks with a turtleneck under for a looser, beat-up drab neutral henley and throw a heavy jacket over it.

From an article on the costuming:

"Alien has some of my favourite character-based costume design ever. If you want a bit more detail my review is here, but the short version is that most of the clothes we seen on the crew of the Nostromo are well-worn uniforms, with a couple of personal items thrown in. For a group of people who work for a strongly branded corporation -- and may only be allowed a limited quantity of personal items onboard -- this makes perfect sense, especially when you see how dirty some parts of the Nostromo are. Basically, they are dressing for work on the space equivalent of a long-distance freighter ship. The Prometheus, however, is a completely different kettle of fish. Firstly, the ship itself was built specifically for this mission, and is state-of-the-art. For several of the people onboard this is probably the first time they've travelled to another planet, and in the case of Shaw and Holloway at least, they are passionate. Unlike the characters in Alien or Aliens, they aren't just showing up for another day at work in an uninspiring job they don't particularly enjoy. The fact that everyone seems to be wearing Weyland Industries uniforms kind of makes sense because that's who funded the mission in the first place, but also they're really not very... uniform? This isn't something I have a major problem with, but I do feel like it's been consciously included in order to emulate the aesthetic of Alien in a way that doesn't really make a lot of sense. "

From an article on costuming in Alien:

"The main impression I get from the costumes is that while there's a uniform, it's not a hugely strict one. The crew seem to have been given a few stock items of Weyland-Yutani gear each: overalls, tough white cargo trousers, jackets, and sneakers, but nobody is wearing exactly the same outfit as anyone else. It's not as if the crew are on show to the general public so it's likely that part of the reason why they have to wear a uniform is in order to give a sense of unity with the Company, which is exactly the kind of low-level corporate brainwashing technique I'd expect in this setting. They literally have their employer's signature stamped all over them, along with the more specific Nostromo badge and a few more personal marks like American or British flag badges. The crew all have very specialised skills that mean that it's likely they can only work on this type of freighter/refinery ship, so it's not surprising that their feelings towards their corporate overlords are rather mixed. So they wear the uniforms, but each of the crewmembers modifies theirs to show a little individuality."

Obviously we're going to shy away from logos, but this is a good example of how people in an intense and unmonitored situation deconstruct the uniformity imposed on them by their superiors. The little touches count, like a Hawaiian shirt with flowing trees in the midst of the most unnatural setting imaginable. Or a pair of cowboy boots that recall anachronistic tropes.
