How do you guys decide what shoes to wear with your fit? Do you build the fit around the shoes or are they an afterthought?

That pic is the epitomy of "dressed by the internet".

About your question, my wardrobe is very plain an boring. Lots of earth tones and blacks. So it's easier me to combine.

When I'm thinking of what to wear, i'll generally decide on shoes last.

However, if I want to wear a particular pair of shoes which I haven't worn for a while or whatever, the fit will be thought up around them

You can find a balance doing both, basing your fit off your shoes and basing your fit off of other garments.

For example, if you're going to be wearing geobaskets, you would certainly want to build your outfit around those. A couple of fits that I've seen but cannot post at the moment involving geobaskets are simple drop crotch pants, or shorts, with long shirts, etc. Very plain textured clothing in order to highlight your sneakers at the bottom.

On the other hand if you're wearing cheaper shoes that don't really stand out, for example black vulcanized vans you'll find that focusing on a more complex fit would probably be ideal, so that your shoes do not take away from your outfit, and a balance is formed.

I agree with what you said about geos (and similar designer shoes), they're definitely a centerpiece and can be worn with basic outfits to show them off.
What you said about cheap/basic shoes is interesting though. Wouldn't a shitty pair of vans bring down a complex outfit? As someone said already shoes can make or break an outfit, so wouldn't it kind of suck to see a top full of great layering with unique pieces, great pants, and then a pair of cheap shoes?

>Wouldn't a shitty pair of vans bring down a complex outfit?
It depends on the shoe. Pic related for example, while it may not be complex layering involved, there is a lot of draping cloth. The trousers remain in the rule of thirds with a break at his ankles leading down to the black vulcanized vans which do not take anything away from his outfit. They were essentially a safe bet, but keep in mind that I was being very general despite using specific shoes for examples. So in that case, yes there is a lot of room for an outfit to be ruined by a cheap pair of vans, but you can see how nice the slip-ons will go with a break at the ankles as will most lowtop shoes.

first you eliminate the shoes that aren't weather-appropriate

then you consider the rest of your fit and whether you need your shoes to blend gracefully or add visual interest

after that you compare the colors to see if the shoes work with your pants and shirt

generally I start off considering whether my colorful shoes work with an outfit and when none of them do I end up with my brown boots

Hair and shoes say it all. Everything in between is forgivable as long as you keep it simple. Trying to talk with your clothes is passive-aggressive.
