The "mediocre look" is much more familiar to the females with whom you associate. They've probably had countless experiences with males that look like you so they know they can handle you. The look lets them know that you are on their social level. By dressing "steezy," as you say, you remove familiarity from the equation. People don't know how to judge your social level, and as such they probably assume you to be higher in status. Higher in status is much more intimidating.
