I'm almost certain it's synthetic felt. You could probably protect them cheaply with ScotchGard. You'd likely need 3-4 applications of it because the new "eco friendly" ScotchGard isn't nearly as potent as it used to be.

Test it first to make sure it doesn't mess with the color.

Afterwards brush it gently with a natural hair brush to get rid of standing residue without screwing with the fabric.
