Of course you haven't. It's a small watch manufacturer in the town of Lengnau, in Switzerland and since I live nearby and have a friend that works there, I am able to buy their watches with 70%-80% discount.

Which means, I pay around 180 Swiss Francs for something that costs 1000 Swiss Francs retail.

Says the guy that has no idea what he's talking about. I live in the city that makes all the fucking Swiss movements that your shitty Hamiltons and Co. use, even fucking Breitling, IWC and other luxury brands use ETA/Valjoux movements in their overpriced pieces of shit (you are only paying for the brand to be honest).

So, I decided that I will spend my money on something that has quality and isn't that expensive, that's why I have so many watches from the same brand.

See this >>6856496 one? It uses the same movement as the middle to high tier Breitlings and IWCs, I paid 1100 Swiss Francs for it, while it costs over 5k in retail.

I'm not an idiot that just buys for the brand, I buy for the stuff that is inside.

You really don't know much about watches do you? I don't use my watches because they look good or they are more accurate (automatic watches are actually less accurate than quartz ones, if you even know what that is). I like them because I think it is impressive to have X amount of moving parts, like gears springs and cogs, functioning 24/7 on a small package on my wrist. The engineering behind it impresses me.

It's like arguing with a guy that collects classic cars about how his Jaguar Type E is an outdated car. It's outdated, there are better, more modern cars out there, but someone that collects classic cars, does so because he loves all the stuff that is inside that car and underneath the hood.

Your cellphone is a piece of silicon, metal and plastic that will be thrown away within 1-2 years. Your watch can have a story behind it, be associated with years of memories, can be purchased to commemorate something, and can be passed on to your children or grandchildren one day. It's also one of the few accessories men can genuinely get away with wearing for a little bit of self-expression.

This is why I own mostly automatic watches and love their movements and the way they work.

the problem is not the problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem

changing bands is easy, buy a $9 NATO strap, use a safety pin to pull the old strap off and put the new one on.
just go on youtube for a how-to

and again I can't help with your WR question. If it says that, the minimum it would be is 3-BAR or 30 metres (fine for hand/face washing and rain but not really swimming/showering etc)

yes size matters, you should get something that fits your wrist.

>when they say size
this is the dial size, so watch face and bezel (case border) as well (but not including the crown).

if you want nitty gritty accuracy, certain watch styles are meant to be sized and fit differently on a wrist e.g. a dress watch is usually on the smaller end of the scale; 35mm to 39mm while a pilots watch with chrono sub dials can be anywhere from 40mm to 45mm

>>6860072

>>6860152
None of the standard Vostoks have proprietary bands/lugs like my Neptune above I had to cut a band for. Most of them take 18mm bands, and one Amphibian takes 22mm.

if you listen to /fa/ you'll end up buying an ugly ass orient or seiko 5 with a mechanical movement just for the sake of buying a "real watch". it will keep ok time for about 5 years and then stop working and you'll have to pay a specialist another $150 for a cleaning and adjustment. does this sound like a good idea? yeah didn't think so.

buy a watch from a fashion designer and when it breaks buy a new one. if you want a "real watch" you should spend at least $1000 on an actual permanent watch that you won't feel bad about paying maintenance for. don't have $1000? yeah neither do a lot of the 17-20 year olds on /fa/. that's why they make stuff like fossil and skagen. keeps great time, looks pretty good, and doesn't cost a lot.

how does this logic make more sense than buying a "real" auto/mechanical watch that when it is due for servicing in 5 years you could also just replace it brand new?

Oh but people will care so much when they see your watch says Seiko and not Skagen, right? No, actually no one is impressed by either brand and there is no practical difference.

>Well, if they're both at the same price point, what is your point exactly?

One looks good and keeps quartz time. One looks like shit and keeps low end mechanical time.

If you can find a quartz watch by Orient or Seiko or Citizen that looks good, then by all means go for it. There certainly are a handful of ok looking ones. Problem is most of them make me want to stab my eyes out with chopsticks.

It has nice minimalist/bauhaus styling but is rather absurdly priced at £280.00
Cadence has similar stuff at significantly less if you join their mailing list but a lot of it is out of stock.

Jewels are used to reduce friction. In theory, this improves the longevity of the watch but lots of vintage non-jewelled movements can still be found running quite well. pic related are the ones I'm currently working on.

Like most quartz watches, that watch would not be under the kind of constant stress that a watch with a sweeping hand would be but some having some jewels is not bad. Lots of vintage non-jewelled movements can still be found running quite well

If you look this up on wiki, jewels in watch movements were at one time something akin to dick-measuring contests amongst watch brands.

>Will it look weird with it just being a circle and no band spring holder/extension?

I know why you're upset, it's because you felt as if you knew anything and everything about fashion, and then here comes along these watch nerds that open up to you this whole new plane god-tier accessories and it hurts you to think that its about more than whats aesthetically pleasing - and that what you think is aesthetically pleasing was wrong anyway - so you want to dismiss all this and stick to your guns - you're too jaded to learn something new.

cool man, if you want to wear a watch that's the same brand as your shoes and know nothing about it be our guest, we won't look down on you, much.

You have yet to explain why your ugly ass mechanical Orient is any better than a quartz Fossil in the same approximate price range. I've already given several reasons why it's objectively much worse. In addition, I've given you explicit reasons why the quartz offerings are basically indistinguishable on aesthetic grounds, on which the "fashion" watches usually win out.

Watch appreciation is fun and all but if you can't step back and look at things from an objective angle from time to time, you're no better than the people who buy Hugo Boss watches that you pretend are beneath you. I'm sorry this upsets you as I can see you feel strongly about your regurgitated advice, but you might want to try learning something about horology (and I don't mean regurgitated sound bites) before dishing out bad advice.

> Why does /fa/ prefer mechanical actions over quartz ones and why?

Because /fa/ read somewhere that mechanical is what "real watches" are made from and quartz is cheap garbage. They're blissfully unaware of the existence of high end quartz let alone the problems that come with mechanical movements, because their knowledge is based on a few recycled factoids that they picked up right here on /fa/.

>And I do know mechanical actions exist for $100-$200 and some are good so I'm looking for recommendations.

The mechanical movement you'll get in a $200 Seiko is no better than the mechanical movement you'd get in a $65 Seiko. Pretty much all sub-$600 Seikos are 7s26 powered. To the same point, pretty much all sub-$1000 watches are powered by either 72S6, 6R15, ETA 2824, or Orient 469 which is a slightly modified low grade Seiko movement from the 70s.

>For $1k I'd get a Victorinox or something with at least a Swiss-made mechanism.

You can get a Victorinox for far less. For your purposes just get a Fossil or a Skagen or something that you find aesthetically acceptable. The only reason to get a mechanical is if there's something about mechanical watches that you find inherently attractive, and based on your lack of research you don't seem interested enough to justify the compromises. If you do want one, just get the cheapest possible example from a Japanese brand unless you honestly think that $200 Seiko is pretty enough to waste the extra money on.

>> No.6875380

>>6875131
the 1000 dollar range opens you up to a lot more selection... but as the poster i quoted says, you're gonna be limited to the same few movements, some might be modified by the watch houses...

If you want in house movement... which is what the whole snobbery is really about... you're gonna have to dig pretty deep into your pockets... not necesarily because the craftsmanship is better, but because the companies know how to market and squeeze more money out of constumers.

>And why does /fa/ prefer autos over quartz in this price range just outta curiosity?

Because they are euphoric classy gentlemen. In reality, mechanical watches in that price range are 30$ mass produced bulk no matter if they are Swiss or Chinese, if someone finds "soul" (most common reasoning for mechanical watches) in that I can't but wonder how.

I'd just stick with quartz in price range under say 1-2k. It's objectively better in every way imaginable (except maybe bit harder to flip, but quartz has their WIS fanbase if you look for it), and has just as much "soul" as the bulk mechanicals that share the price range.

Once you get to the hand-finished inhouse stuff I can understand the appreciation for mechanical.

"The domed Hesalite crystal is one of my favorite design features of the watch. It spans 38mm, making it run the case almost edge-to-edge, and it stands off the watch just over 2mm, giving it a lot of presence. Not only does the crystal have the right aesthetic for the period of this watch, it acts as a vitrine for the dial, presenting the information within. Practically speaking, it also has great optical clarity when viewed at most angles and low glare. Though the Hesalite, which is acrylic, presents a higher potential for scratching, I don’t think it cheapens the watch at all. In fact, like with my Helson Skin Diver, I believe it adds value to the watch by being so aesthetically well matched. It is also easy to buff shallow scratches from daily wear with some polywatch."

First, what makes a quartz watch god-tier? If the god-tier starts around $4k, what does the cheaper watches have that makes them inferior? (quality material, better movement, more accurate time keeping?)
Secondly, where to buy and how to know what we are buying on the used market, and how to know what is a fair price for a given watch? On the used market, are quartz better than mechanical? It seems like a nice way to find a good looking watch from a real watchmaker for cheap, but then again, how to separate the real ones from the fakes?
Lastly, not a question but more of a disclaimer: I have to admit I'm a mechanical fan (not because of /fa/ rants but because of a lifelong addiction to everything automated, small and precise (I quite love pistols too for them being able to withstand an explosion everytime they are "used" and used that energy to eject the cartridge and load a new one, with so many different mecanism too))

If Chinese isn't to your liking, Seiko has a similar one: SNK131K. But I sort of appreciate the heritage I share with something like Seagull, even if my family isn't even from anywhere near Tianjin.

Mechanicals. The topmost two I repaired in the past few days. The women's watch is a friend's who wanted me to check it out but there's nothing wrong with it. The watch marked "SELF-WIND" is likely the oldest of them all, as the back still reads "US TIME CORPORATION" and the dial reads "MADE IN THE USA". I thought I repaired it, but the timing is too sporadic and I can't get it open again. The diver is the most fucked of them all thanks to a broken balance staff pivot. Roland Ranfft covers this very well, if you're interested:

And finally, I made a big-ass fucking mistake of not doing my research before taking apart that "Versace"-dialed one: the manual clearly states "Do NOT lift the rotor; slide it off." I broke a pawl finger in the process.

If you're interested in how I've been learning all of this, almost all the old service manuals for Vintage Timex watches can be found at the Vintage Timex Forum.
