I live a pretty active lifestyle and my work is somewhat manual labour related, the bracelet on my Aquaracer got fucked up pretty bad by some concrete tile action, so I am kind of biased towards getting a non-bracelet next as a replacement Seamaster bracelet is not cheap.

Watches are, after all, meant to be worn.

And I get some douchebag kind of satisfaction when Im working and co-workers or customers see my watches.
Even though a 2500$'ish watch isnt anything to brag about in the actual watch enthusiast circles but in daily life they get the job done.

One thing I have learned over the last 2-3 years Ive been in to watches.. Just get the watch you actually want, save for it if you have to. Dont accept subtitutes. I have spent atleast 5K on swapping and trading watches instead of just getting what I *actually* want. In the long term going for broke the first time is more cost effective.
Then again, the more one gets in to watches the more they learn about brands and heritage and their opinions of watchmakers and movements change.

For me.. Never paying 2K+ for a ETA/Sellita movement in "fancy clothes" again. So low-end Breitlings, TAGs and whatever else are OUT, with maybe Sinn the exception as they do make very good and extensive modifications on the base movements..

interesting points

I've only been taking my obsession with watches seriously for just under a year now and I don't have anything of value yet (still a student) but as far as money goes, I feel like everything above 2K is just filler and not worth having unless its a grail - and everything below that price range can fulfill it's duty in all aspects of what a watch is (with the sole exception of making higher end enthusiasts dicks wiggle)

At the same time, I come from a background where items are valued more for their purpose and sentimental value than their pricetag/bling factor. So at the same time I would have a hard time buying my grail even if I had the money because I'd probably hate myself for doing so [vintage Blancpain Flyback if you're wondering]

I'm not familiar with Sellita movements, who uses them where?

Many brands swap ETA and Sellita depending on availability.

Sellita SW200 is a Czech carbon-copy of the ETA-2824. TAG Heuer's "Calibre 5" is a SW200 for example as is Oris' 735.

More and more microbrands have moved to this movement due to ETA cutting back availability and ramping up cost.
The Sw200-1 also runs more accurately than the 2824-2 according to a few places as well as my personal experience with my TAG Heuer Aquaracer WAK2110.BA0830. It was well within COSC.

I still find it distasteful to "name" movements based on either one these though..

Omega, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Rolex, Zenith(a lot of brands use Zenith movements), IWC, Panerai, PP & AP & JLC ofcourse, Seiko, Girrard Perregaux, Ulysse Nardin.

But the list is fast getting in to those 5-figure smaller Swiss boutique stuffs. Most relevant inhouse makers that are actually "attainable" are mostly the Omega-Rolex-Panerai-IWC and especially Zenith, as their El Primero is featured virtually everywhere in the 5-10K range of watch brands. as far as i understood. Sellita is still a Swiss company, I don't understand where you're pulling this Czech crap from. Are you confusing the sellita.ch website with Czech? Because Ch means Confoederatio Helvetica, Swiss Federation in Latin.

So clarify please, otherwise you're spreading misinformation.

>>6825237

There are many reasons, all of them business. SWATCH/ETA was supplying some 80% of all swiss watch movements at one point, one of the reasons would be to secure supply for their own brands (Rado, Omega, Longines, Bregeut to name a few)

There are a lot of Swiss watch makers that use both in house and ETA (IWC... or they did, they now use Sellita in the models that did use ETA whilst the top models are all Inhouse) and exclusively In house like PP and JLC

>>"attainable" are mostly the Omega-Rolex-Panerai-IWC and especially Zenith

can't say i've ever been a fan of Zenith, but IWC's cheapest in house movement starts at 12K well above any of the other brands you mentioned.

When it comes to sub-$50 digitals, Casio really cuts their corners. The stainless steel bracelet is very cheap, and the casing is plastic. However, the modules that they use are excellent.

It is my plan to build a whole new watch around the AE-1200 module. I'm going to make it sleeker while I'm at it.

Yeah that doesn't make sense given Sellita has been copying ETA for a long while, that' the whole point of their current business. They're stepping into the void that's been left by ETA's refusal to resupply. Hence why companies like IWC are using Sellita movements because they are exact copies of ETA movement that used to be used. I don't understand why they would need to get someone else, especially the Czech republic to do it... unless it's still 50% Swiss made and completely assembled in Siwtzerland... otherwise it would fail the "Swiss Made" classification.

Check below for definitions according to the federation of the Swiss watch industry.

http://www.fhs.ch/en/swissm.php

A Swiss watch

Only when it is Swiss, may a watch carry the indications "Swiss made" or "Swiss", or any other expression containing the word "Swiss" or its translation, on the outside. According to Section 1a OSM, a watch is considered to be Swiss if:

its movement is Swiss;
its movement is cased up in Switzerland;
and the manufacturer carries out the final inspection in Switzerland.
A Swiss watch movement

As we have seen, to be Swiss, a watch must use a Swiss movement. According to Section 2 OSM, a movement is considered to be Swiss if:

it has been assembled in Switzerland;
it has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland; and
the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly.
If the movement fulfills these conditions, but the watch is not assembled in Switzerland, the "Swiss" indication may be affixed to one of the components of the movement. On the outside of the watch, may then only appear the "mouvement suisse" or "Swiss movement" indication. Section 3 § 3 OSM requires that the word "movement" appear in full, and be written in the same type-face, of identical size and colour, as the word "Swiss".

>>6825372
I know, I know. There's a guy in Hong Kong that supplies these modules for $5 a pop.

As for the case, it's not a big deal. I have plenty of faith in my crafting skills. The crystal, though, will be a pain in the ass. I would probably have to get one custom made. I won't use the original one because it feels like I'm cutting corners.

There was a knowledgeable poster last time this came up, who was posting very subtle, Citizen, and Seiko watches that to the untrained eye looked quite generic but to collectors were very valuable. Does anyone know what the watches could possibly be?

For me the more understated the better. I like a fine leather strap, a regular size face, no adornments. Simplicity is my preference, the more utilitarian the better.

That's a great fucking watch and I came really close to buying it a couple months ago. Three different gradients on the dial and one of the best display case backs I've ever seen on a <$1000 watch.

Its actually a great watch. It is actually fully mechanical and has a good battery reserve. Only issue is the metal strap clip mechanism gets caught and undoes sometimes... probably due to poor maintenance. Id recommend getting something from a watchmaker, like a proper swiss or german made timepiece, not that other bulshit. Gets exey though...

Won't be so bad if they keep the watches as a simply relay of a phone's information so they don't need to be continually improved. The industry is full of Jews though, so never mind.

I wouldn't be surprised if higher tiered companies didn't start coming out with their own smartwatches just so they can slap their name on them and charge a fortune. There are already a few silly Porsche phones and shit.
