I'd say this is bland and a bit too trendy. The dip dye top is done. Also notice how the colour scheme is almost identical to the pic above. Smells a little fishy to me. The sleeves aren't cuffed properly. To be honest I really don't like this fit.

MFA is fine, just don't scroll down to the lower voted links on WAYWT's, it's not hard? The top 10 every thread are decent.
They have better conversations which generally stay on topic and never degrade into petty insults, memes and name-calling.
They have some circle-jerking but nothing to the extent of /fa/.

Alekzia Hosein is a 21-year old Media and Communications (top lel) student at UofT. She is simultaneously pursuing a certificate in Fashion Co-ordination and Styling at Ryerson University. She had been working as the managing editor of The Mike, the official newspaper of St. Michael's college for about a year and a half.

Alekzia has a passion for fashion. Her mother has money and Alekzia isn't afraid to take full advantage of this. Speaking of family, she also has a cute little sister that looks just like her!

This year, Alekzia wants to eat more honey dew melon, try roller derby, and learn to make/use Gantt charts in planning projects (I can help you with this!)

This thread has actually made me realize how much better MFA is than /fa/. I'm /fa/ a few hours a day and I realise there are only a couple of knowledgeable posters. A quick look at the MFA sidebar is all you need to see to realise how much more helpful and knowledgeable they are.

You think the /fa/ WAYWT is superior? are you kidding me? The vast majority of /fa/'s fits are oversized tees, jeans and sneakers. Look at the MFA waywt thread and you'll see variety; menswear, streetwear, goof etc.

I will say that /fa/ is more exciting, it's faster and less moderated so the criticism is more honest, but it's full of nonconstructive criticism spouted by 17yr olds with no idea themselves.

/fa/ would benefit from an ID situation like /soc/ and /b/ where there is at least some accountability for your criticism, and "talk shit, post fit" would actually carry some weight.

Is it though? I don't think so.
Spoon feeding solutions to problems provides a starting point for someone who is a complete novice, everyone needs do develop their personal style, but you NEED a starting point, a base of knowledge which MFA provides.

Imagine coming to /fa/ having no knowledge of fashion at all. It would take you MONTHS to get the same amount of information that just one look at the sidebar would get you.

>A quick look at the MFA sidebar is all you need to see to realise how much more helpful and knowledgeable they are.

i dont think the sidebar is representative of the knowledge of the users of the website, and i dont think there are very many posts that demonstrate in depth knowledge of design and the garment industry.

>You think the /fa/ WAYWT is superior? are you kidding me? The vast majority of /fa/'s fits are oversized tees, jeans and sneakers. Look at the MFA waywt thread and you'll see variety; menswear, streetwear, goof etc.

its a bigger website with more users willing to post, with a larger pool and wide range of styles encouraged, its inevitable that there is a greater range of outfits. many horrible, some decent, few excellent. but proportionally, i think /fa/ has better outfits in a given thread than mfa does.

>but it's full of nonconstructive criticism spouted by 17yr olds with no idea themselves.

>/fa/ would benefit from an ID situation like /soc/ and /b/ where there is at least some accountability for your criticism, and "talk shit, post fit" would actually carry some weight.

youre expected to know simple shit that a retarded would understand already. do you think sz is shit because it doesnt teach you how the fucking colour wheel works? all those shit guides just attract dumbasses who dont know shit about fashion. which leads to 80000 posts of "what colour clarks desert boots should i get" instead of discussion of runway shows, designers, ect. mfa looks exactly like what /fa/ looked like during it's first 2 years.

basically no one had any idea what they were doing, everyone was a pleb, there was a massive influx of new people from other boards on a daily basis, and as a result of all this there was a massive emphasis on discussing the basics of fashion and creating charts and infographics about how to dress. there was also a small handful of people who dressed pretty decently and were treated like gods because everyone else was so basic (shineon anyone?).

the only difference is early /fa/ (and earlier incarnations of 4chan in general) was insanely vicious and people got trolled into oblivion (godof/fa/ and J aka banana faggot being great examples). reddit doesn't seem to take kindly to people being doxed or called faggots and being shooped.

but otherwise yeah mfa looks just like early /fa/ and seems to have the same main problem as well which was that the level of dialogue could never reach a particularly high or interesting level. don't get me wrong /fa/ is still struggling with this but it's light years beyond what it used to be. there was seriously a time when owning 1 piece of designer clothing was considered baller as fuck and almost everyone wore raw denim with american apparel. i dont read the waywt threads on here but i certainly get the vibe that there are way more people dropping way more cash than ever before and that's really a good thing for raising the level of discussion of something so consumption based like fashion.

pretty sure leddit is stuck with way more high schoolers and broke college freshmans than /fa/ ever was. the dialogue isn't at a very high level here but it's higher than it's ever been before and it's the only fashion site with anything resembling real anonymity. the problem is people are judging /fa/ as not being good at things that it shouldn't even be trying to do because it has no registration. /fa/ shouldn't even have a sticky or "always up" threads or WAYWT's for that matter. if you want that shit there will always be sites like leddit et al. that will be able to do it a hundred times better. /fa/ (and 4chan in general) is best for quick flippant no frills attached anonymous discussions and spontaneity, it should be as informal as possible. in that regard we kick the shit out of every other fashion site including leddit where i'm sure everyone has to curate and edit themselves or is routinely pandering for upvotes or where dissenting opinions are downvoted and hidden or where everything is highly structured and rigid and peoples value is judged based on their karma points and not their posting quality. come to think of it, how the fuck could anyone in this thread think leddit could ever be anything but an incredibly shitty sterilized corporate knock off of 4chan?

Probably the best and most concise description of old /fa/ yet. Its always so frustrating when people lament the current state of /fa/ as having gone through a stylistic regression from a supposed golden age of menswear when in actuality the level of discussion was incredibly pedestrian and rigidly adhered to traditional menswear, hedi was the only designer anyone knew, and lookbook-tier bullshit was held as the end all, be all of fashion.

I think the evolution from a board that once unquestioningly considered H&M as a solid place to shop to one where any mention of it gets lambasted into oblivion is good progress.

Totally, however some days I do look back and think but holy shit was it entertaining.

There will never be as much tripfag drama as early /fa/. It's actually crazy to think there are people on 4chan who never experienced it pre-/soc/ the attention whoring was simultaneously infuriating and yet so incredibly satisfying and hilarious when people would band together to attack someone. It was like we all mutually bonded over hating the people who had to make a thread about themselves every day. Also what about the Miranda Priestly reveal? Nothing like that will probably ever happen again. The IRC channel was dope as hell too and I actually still keep in touch with 5~ or so people from there. I dunno it felt more like a community back then even if the level of discussion was much weaker.

I dunno I'm probably extremely biased because it was when I was first getting into not just clothes but music, film, art, etc. I actually almost trashed my apartment the other day because I majorly fucked up a sample I was sewing and putting on some music from /fa/ circa 2008 actually calmed me down enough to get my shit together. So it really is a period I look back on with fondness for all it's faults. I even kind of miss the people I hated.

Oh well, life goes on.

I think anyone whose been around since the inception of /fa/ and has still managed to somehow stick around for over half a decade can agree that the board is better than it used to be, but it's also hard to not look back on the early days with fondness. Obviously none of us knew what we were doing, but there was a certain kinship that sprouted from our ignorance as we tried to figure out what this whole fashion thing was all about and attempted to establish an identity for our board. And of course, since we could only discuss Topman and look at Sartorialist pictures so much, I think that led us to more readily jump onto off-topic/meta/OC things than we do today. These days people like to reference slater and casemods as being the defining tripfags of old /fa/, but they obviously weren't around for godof/fa/, miranda, coolguy22, unpop, etc. who paved the way for the personality trips and the subsequent tripfag circlejerk that was 2009-2011 /fa/. The discussions were shit, sure, but it was nonetheless important in establishing the foundations of the board and I think that's why we're so fond of it; we helped make something together.

For many people, old /fa/ died after the mirandabags drama, but for me it was when hipsteryouth left the board. He was such an integral part in defining the boards culture by being the antithesis of the personality trip and engaging with the community in a positive, helpful way. I think its a shame how his contributions are glossed over because he really did invest a lot of time in producing fashion-related content and showed us that you can be a trip without smothering the board with your personal life.

You either weren't here or have forgotten, but there was a time when guides were king on /fa/. All it left us with was a set of newfags who thought they were king-shit because they spent an afternoon reading a few infografics. People would actually argue over good fits because there was a 'rule' which couldn't be broken. /fa/ is still pig headed, but at least it's better than it was.

I don't like to shit on MFA because there was a time when we were virtually identical and yet would get the same type of threads circle-jerking how good we were.

Yeah, pretty much, angriest I've been in a really long time.

>>6817028

Yeah, totally feeling this post, also it's pretty surprising how few people who were into fashion 5 years ago are still into it today. It's weird for me because it's the thing I care about the most but I forget plenty of stuff came before it like film, music, video games, anime whatever and that fashion for a lot of people is just another niche little thing they get into really hardcore for a couple years than drop for the next thing. Even people who seem like they'd never grow out of it (JOEJONAS...) have moved on.

To me /fa/ could be divided up into these periods:

1) Not safe for work /fa/. From day 1 until I think a few weeks later when moot turned it into a blue board. It was a massive lightning rod for fagfags who didn't have stuff like /hm/ or /lgbt/ so they kind of took it over and it became a gay porn dump with occasional fashion discussion.

>> No.6820395
File: 50 KB, 666x386, coolguy22 2.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
6820395

2) Proto-/fa/. After moot turned it into a blue board the whole atmosphere changed and the focus on fashion became much stronger. This period maybe lasted for 2-3 months and was kind of where you had new people tripping every day and identities were beginning to form and people were beginning to either like or dislike certain posters. Also this was kind of when the first memes hadn't really started but the groundwork was being laid. Like no one at the time new that a year later you'd be able to say "oh look a haircut thread how surprising" and everyone would giggle.

3) Golden age /fa/. This was when solid tripfag identities had been established and certain patterns in thread creation now existed and you had an IRC channel and people working together to make infographics and was just generally what I would describe as the period when /fa/ was the most productive and the most tight knit.

4) Fall of the Roman empire /fa/. At this point /fa/ was probably at the lowest that it's ever been, you had 2-3 cliques of tripfags that all hated each other and most of the decent tripfags had been chased away. I can remember taking part in this period and sort of just being like. You know what I'm bored of talking about hitler youths and raw dennys im basically going to shit on every thread i come across in the most ridiculous way possible and only reply seriously to real fashion threads. I think my thought train was that it would foster good discussion but all it did was egg on other tripfags to sort of do the same thing. Also it got to a point when I did reply seriously everyone thought I was trolling anyway.

That's the best history I can put together but its important to know I was only truly active from 08 to 10, kind of took a sabbatical from 11-12, and now i've shown up again in 13. Although I did lurk intermediately during the period I was away.

>For many people, old /fa/ died after the mirandabags drama, but for me it was when hipsteryouth left the board.

Haha crazy, I dunno for me it was really fall of the roman empire /fa/ which I look upon with fond memories but everyone else will consider the ultimate low point of the board. It was so fucking decadent and ridiculous I dunno what the fuck I was on back then but some of the shit I came up with still makes me laugh. imo it was a period that had to happen, we needed a tripfag treblinka in order for the board to start over anew, the type of posting I took part in was so negative and accumulated so much detritus but yeah holy shit it was hilarious.

>> No.6820401
File: 47 KB, 749x467, coolguy22 1.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
6820401

5) Final chapter /fa/. I don't remember it happening with a bang but more like a very quick fizzle. It felt like all the tripfags mentioned above somehow got mutually bored at the exact same time and left. The IRC channel was gone, the competing tinychat kind of disappeared and honestly this was maybe the strangest period /fa/ has been through. It was seriously like the day before you had 20+ tripfags all calling each other faggots in the most imaginative ways possible and then all of the sudden they were all gone. The board had gone from totally hilarious to completely boring but it was the beginning of the healing process. It was pretty much /fa/ starting over from ground zero. I took a leave of absence during this period so the next couple entries will be kind of murky.

6) New iron age /fa/. I guess this is when people like slater and casemods first showed up. I agree that I find it really bizarre when people say they were the defining tripfags of /fa/ because they showed up so late to the game. How I feel it went down is they became so notorious because they started posting in the period when /fa/ had the least tripfags, I'm pretty sure this whole portion was kind of just them fucking around and the rest of the board being anon and trying to patch things up.

7) Renaissance /fa/. I'd say this is probably the period we're in now but someone who has actually been around for most of it would probably be able to split it up into many separate categories. Like if I knew when he first showed up I would probably say twerk and his band of merry men ushered in a new era by promoting the dialogue. Also whenever regular WAYWT threads started happening because that is something that never existed on /fa/ before. You sort of had them in the first 2 years but hardly anyone posted and they were really vicious and didn't really benefit anyone.

Oh also on that note I hung out with hipsteryouth when I went to montreal, he's the french friend I mention in pic related. He's not huge into fashion anymore but still keeps up to date, he wears stuff like norse projects, acne, and apc. He has a fiance and works with an insurance company (sounds lame but he makes bank and basically gets to crunch numbers on his own and then collude with 2 other guys who do the same thing once a week, so no real co-workers, bosses, or general office shit). He travels a lot and is living pretty damn good. We barely talked about /fa/ though (read: not at all) he's a decent bit older than me (pushing 30) and doesn't really fuck with the internet much anymore. But yeah he's just as cool offline as he was online, just a really nice dude who really loves to show / teach people stuff.
