Hey /fa/, long story short I've been given the opportunity to design and make techwear jackets. I've always thought it was very interesting but have not explored it as much and it'd be great if you guys could throw in suggestions or elements that you would like to see in such a product, and share pictures.

A client based techwear design house, we only work on the actual development of the product like initial design, make the samples, and send them off to be manufactures in factories. The owner wants to start his own line as well and so we are just experimenting and making whatever.

Thanks for the input, I am not an active person at all so I don't know anything about the practical functionality of techwear

Techwear jackets for what application? If you just mean a general insulating winter shell:

- Ripstop outer, a normal poly or nylon treated with a good DWR instead of a true waterproof-breathable thing. (I haven't tried Analogy or anythign like that, though.) Very small ripstop squares - like half a centimeter, a centimeter at most.

- Thin layer of very good synthetic insulation. Try to hide any baffling, give it a sleek look.

- A poly inner layer for wicking, preferably lined with merino for superior wicking and smell control.

- Construct it for easy motion, of course.

- Pit zips.

- Taped seams elsewhere, even though it's not actually waterproof, just to get it that much closer.

- An ample but very thin hood, just to cut wind and rain, that stows in a pocket on the upper back.

- Lots of other pockets - kangaroo, inner, maybe even a ticket-pocket styled thing that's actually meant for a phone. But only a single Napoleon pocket.

- Personally, I'd hide the hood pocket under a flap and keep the other zippers visible but discreet, but I'm not going to tell you to do stuff in that much detail.

- Velcro-to-visible reflective patch on the back.

- Waistband cinched with an elastic toggle. Wristbands velcro cinch.

- Slimmish fit, just enough for a thermal baselayer, normal shirt, and a midweight fleece under it.

Basically, I'm thinking of a featured-up version of the Marmot Baffin that's my go-to outer layer from late autumn through the whole winter.

OP I haven't been into techwear too long but I love it and I'll point out a few things I've noticed is favored for these types of garments.

- No obnoxious branding. Sometimes to the point of no visible branding on the outside of the jacket. If there must be branding the key is subtlety.

- Monochrome / Calm colors. Black, grays, white, navy, dark tan, olive, etc. are typical colors for techwear. Aside from this try adding some cool textures like Isaora's Digital Sky mentioned above or Gyakusou's leaf print. Again with this, try to avoid 'loud' coloring.

- Minimalism. This doesn't mean no pockets or typical functional things on the garment, but don't be throwing epaulettes and junk on them either.

- Sleek design / shapes where needed. Personally I like straight lines and solid colors. Look at, for example, Klättermusen's Einride jacket.

- Functionality. Pretty much what >>6798977 has mentioned, I'm not as familar with all of this as some on /fa/ are.

- Fucking parkas. I don't see too many nice techwear parkas that are readily available, wish there were more of them.

- Also as said in the post I referenced, go for relatively slim fits. Personally I really don't like boxy jackets.

here.

I agree with this guy on

>- No obnoxious branding... no visible branding on the outside of the jacket.

Or at least no traditional branding. Some little fan-to-fan wink like Margiela's stitching (which was originally made like that so as to be easy to debrand, actually) is okay.

and

>- Fucking parkas. I don't see too many nice techwear parkas that are readily available, wish there were more of them.

But I'm going to have to dissent about

>- Monochrome / Calm colors. Black, grays, white, navy, dark tan, olive, etc. are typical colors for techwear. Aside from this try adding some cool textures like Isaora's Digital Sky mentioned above or Gyakusou's leaf print. Again with this, try to avoid 'loud' coloring.

I like quiet and I like loud. I like mixing them. Avant-garde fashion has been focused on quiet and subtle, "black is mysterious" shit for too long, and techwear especially needs more loud.

Someone's going to point to all the bright colors in outdoor wear, and I'm going to tell them that's not loud; that's basic. That's every rich high schooler on a ski lift.

and

>- Minimalism. This doesn't mean no pockets or typical functional things on the garment, but don't be throwing epaulettes and junk on them either.

I think a lot of detailing is great; it's just done poorly very frequently. Epaulets are a great example: frequently abused by malltailers, they are actually extremely functional things, literally perfect for securing cameras or bags. Make it clear that's what they're for, and not just as some "lol miltury" vibe shit.

One personal thing: unless it's authentically functional, or either really subtle or over the top (in which case I love it), avoid asymmetry. Except Napoleon pockets; for some reason it's always looked really weird to have two of those for me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, they're great and I really appreciate it. Everything is in the very beginning phase right now so it'll be a while before things start coming into production but maybe I can share some sketches etc soon.

I was going to do LFS or install Gentoo on it. Gonna keep it as a 100% FOSS laptop.

Sure there's always a possibility that concept products are shit, but if it's a good idea, it should see support so future iterations by the original company, or others can see the light of day. It's voting with your wallet.

But they have my attention.

They made some as-far-as-I-can-tell stupid practical design decisions, too: a desktop Atom processor (why not embedded? they usually use lower power for the same level of performance; they just cost more), only USB 2.0, only 10/100 Ethernet, a low-res 13.3 inch screen instead of a higher res ~10 or 11.6" one.

I get they were probably trying to reach a price target for NGO use, but as a retail customer, I'd rather pay $600 for something like this that was more portable, had USB 3, and a 1080P+ IPS screen.

The screen frankly makes the least sense: you're building a low cost system for educational use in the developing world that's meant to be powered by solar, why not make it with one of the smaller, huge volume 10" or 11.6" screens? Why power a larger screen some kid is going to have to schlep?

>>6805026
Gentoo is good if you have the patience to set things up. I don't, so I run Debian-based systems.
