I live in Austin right now. Inb4 anyone says they want to move to Austin. I'm about to red pill you.
Austin is a terrible city to be in your early twenties. The scene is here a joke (besides SXSW), and the city itself is really spread out. Rent is expensive (you'll pay $800 for your room in an OK area--and by OK I mean not 45 minutes away in San Marcos, Del Valle, or Georgetown.

I hate saying this because many of my friends here are from the border, but a LOT of people move here from Brownsville/Laredo/McAllen for school and come here thinking it's the most amazing city on the planet, when really it's just full of the same boring fucks they went to high school with.

Where would I like to live? How about somewhere with a little bit of a real music scene and some diversity. You can't even find ethnic foods in Austin besides Garaj Mahal and Rio's cafe.

I'm moving to NYC in a year. Can't wait to pay outrageous prices for rent and actually feel like it's worth it. At least there won't be Nickelback-tier hard rock bands playing on every corner.

i'm happy where i already am: Jaeren in Norway.
the district Jaeren is pretty much the entirety of Norway in a nutshell.
there are small, secluded islands and rocky beaches to the west, mountains and forests to the east and great hills and farms in between, dotted with small, quiet towns and forgotten Viking ruins.
and if you ever get tired of the countryside, there's always a wild night life in Stavanger.

Cheapest? It really depends on who you're living with.

People (many who have never even been to NYC, let alone Newark Int'l Airport) try to it up as if NYC is impossible to live in if you don't have a good job.

The fact is, people get by with roommates. The cheapest you will find are probably lofts in Brooklyn with ten people each to a tiny room.

Of course, you COULD live somewhere like Crown Heights or Flatbush, but I'm not sure if it'd be enjoyable.

It's okay and the mall is nice but I avoid Santa Monica. It's a bit touristy but might be fun for a date night or something. If you want to go to a weird club go to Zanzibar, it's 2 blocks from the promenade. Only went once but the random African dancers were pretty cool. Venice is awesome bro. Definitely hit it up. Take a girl to the Casa del Mar lobby bar to impress her and enjoy the live music. If you have some money go to Gjelina and get the chicken pizza and get the special cocktail, the long walk home. There are a lot of bars in Venice and of course Intelligentsia for coffee. It's all really hipster but this is /fa/ so whatever. For other shopping go to La Brea where they have Union LA, Am Rag, SelfEdge, Steve Alan, etc. If you want more specifics I can also recommend stuff. Assuming you're an incoming freshman (I didn't read the thread). Also, if you are at UCLA make Chinese and Korean Friends. Have the Koreans take you to ktown and go to Hangover. All you can drink for 20 bucks. Have the chinese take you to San Gabriel Valley. Go to 101 noodle express and then go to Als cocktails on Main in Alhambra. Theyll know the first guaranteed, might not know the second. If under 21, Als and ktown wont check id's if you're not dumb.

It's kind of sad, but I have white and Middle Eastern friends from up north (Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, etc.) and obviously they're wealthy and don't get in trouble for throwing parties at their houses since their parents are all extremely liberal. I'm a big coffee drinker and have been to Urth (inb4 shitstorm) and it wasn't too great.. Intelligentsia looks very interesting though. I live in Salisbury, Maryland. Surprisingly there's an active noise scene here so that makes it tolerable, but I really want to go to NYC. Plus I'm friends with pretty much the entire music scene here which kind of takes away from the mystique of it all. Recently we had noise artists come down from philly but that's the most exciting thing to happen here recently. There's no Zara, no H&M, no Uniqlo, no American Apparel, etc. so I just end up buying all my clothes at Target and Walmart, occasionally Pacsun and Jcpenney at our lackluster mall. Going to community college for free currently so I'm just in relaxation mode.

if you like coffee also consider Balconi Coffee company on Olympic right next to Sawtelle. It's five minutes from campus. Get the almond essence latte. Then try the other drinks as well. Also, boba loca by campus stocks intelligentsia if you want to try it before driving down to Venice. Opening Ceremony is also an option if you like Am Rag. I mostly just shop online right now, and I'm moving to Asia in a month so I have to refrain from copping shit until I get settled there. So I guess you're under 21 which is honestly too bad because LA has a lot of good bars and gastropubs and such. House parties are of course cool and chilling with frat bros is a part of the college experience but it gets old which is why I definitely recommend going to more bars when you get legal. Except don't go to O'haras(maloneys) that shithole by campus near Brandy Melville and up the street from whole foods. I'd still recommend trying to chill with some Asians if you can, just for the culture exchange and shit. Maybe learn a new language or something. Too many people go to college and spend the whole time hanging out in cliques, it makes for a lame experience. I think it's better to go abroad once or twice, have a wide group of acquaintances, and have as much fun as possible. If you can't entertain people at a party ten years from now with your conversational skills college was a waste.

Some non-drinking things to consider, 626 night market in the San Gabriel Valley. A giant asian night market with tons of food. I haven't been yet but all my asian friends and some non-asians have and all say it's awesome. Go to Malibu for the day. Drive to Zuma and go to Lily's (a mexican place) for burritos. Griffith Park observatory is cool even alone, and it's near Umami Burger in Los Feliz. If you have/get a qt3.14 wait till winter then take her to the Huntington Library and the LA Arboretum. The Getty Museum does music on saturday nights (not sure if it's only during the summer).

Consider taking up a sport or martial art. PKG on westwood is a good westside option for MMA/Muay Thai, and Sawtelle Judo is good for Judo. If you like boxing consider going to Wild Card Gym, even if you don't work out. Go to a dodgers game. Maybe even plan for next summer if you have to. Dodgers games at night in the summer air are great. Don't even have to like baseball. If you like raves there are a lot that go on. I don't go but some friends do, I think they went to HARD(?) a couple weeks ago. Seems those are always going on. Hike the Hollywood sign. Hike everywhere if you like it. LA has a lot of hikes everywhere. I don't go to shows much but there are a lot of places to hit them up in town. I just can't remember off the top of my head the main ones. There's a decent comedy scene if you like stand up. Again, can't remember specific venues. If you're up at 4 am, consider going to Canters deli. Honestly, the food is shit and overpriced but it's as LA as you can get. When you're 21 go to the Kibbutz room. LACMA is underrated museum wise. During the day Venice boardwalk is cool. Can't think of anything else that's non-drinking. Oh, http://cinespia.org this is cool.

Any decent thing about LA has been squashed by all you airheads who are so busy being self important you can't see how awful it is.
