Very true. I am a musician and I have permanent (mild) hearing damage from playing a ton of club gigs.

The cool thing about Ultimate Ears is they actually save your hearing by blocking out other noise around you. Not through noise cancelling or any such trickery, just through good old fashioned sound isolation. It's like wearing earplugs that reproduce sound. This means you can have them at a much lower volume because they don't have to compete with the environmental noise around you, which will reduce hearing damage in the long-term.

OP here, I was in fact asking if they were fashionable rather than functional. However I have instead already purchased some SOL Tracks headphones because I can switch out the headbands and cords for different colored ones, which is pretty /fa/ if you ask me.
