I don't think they know the references themselves (though some clearly do given how they style it when they buy it), but they know that Zara is based on more expensive, more original designs. Nobody walks into Zara expensive something innovative; they go there for the specific purpose of finding something that speaks to contemporary, high-end design without any of the quality or work behind it.
