I know exactly what you mean, poured concrete walls, exposed wires and ducts and rough looking floorboards. The best part is you culd probably buy a shitty old apartment like that and spruce it up a bit for fairly cheap.

Somewhere on Reddit there's a thread where someone asking about it got a guy who had been looking at buying the building to talk about it. I forget what it was originally, but at some point before it was the Internet's dream pad, it was a Salvadorean nightclub. Three stories. IIRC, the guy said that it was going for ~$600,000.

>you practice your layering game all winter

Am I the only one who actually prefers this to heat? I'll sometimes turn the heat on for half an hour or so after coming home, but I like cold temperatures and most of the time I'm just in a thick sweater or under crazy thick blankets until the room temperature gets too cold for that and I'd have to break out a parka and/or sleeping bag.. I miss the thick blankets when it starts getting hot.

you could always just space heat it if you had to. dangerous, but they work really well. Or you could, of course, always just insulate and drywall the brick.

I'm not sure how heating and a/c bills work in buildings that have more than one tenant.

I don't know Chicago's real estate market at all, but $600k for a three story building in the third largest city in the US does not strike me as a horrible deal.

Also, the guy looking at buying it was looking at it as a rental property, which AFAIK it is now.

Lastly, the US is lousy with old industrial cities with empty warehouses and spaces like this, and they'll be much cheaper. Hell, you could probably squat one in Detroit and get a letter of thanks from the city.

Shoeboxes are cheap in Manhattan. The only place you'll find windows and space and a look like that is going to be in Soho, parts of Chelsea and the garment district.

you guys seem to know the deal with real estate. in my south american-scum delusion of leaving this third world country i've dreamed about moving to the usa, but don't really know the house/apartment prices. could you refer me to a site that shows houses/apartments for rental or something like that? thx

If you want all three floors.. like 4k+sqft okay then we're talking big money, but that room pictured is maybe barely over 1k sqft with no insulation and no room dividers, so I stick by my 2mil estimate.
