I suck shit at drawing
I've just been doodling abstract shapes and patterns in notebooks for years until a couple semesters ago in a French class I actually drew something with a shape and a form. I surprised myself. Got more into drawing a few months later, just more doodles, but now drawing actual things instead of geometric patterns.

Anyway I hadn't drawn a single thing in months until I saw this thread. Have some bad drawings to make you feel better.

Language tuition seems to do strange things to your brain.

I was a little better than the average person at drawing as a teenager, but still nothing special. Then I started learning Japanese (pretty seriously, made it two years into a Japanese language degree before life kicked me in the balls and I had to drop out of uni), and practicing kanji all day every day sent my penmanship and creativity through the roof.

after cramming 30-40 kanji in a sitting, I would have to get paper, pencils and pens and draw. It was like some kind of autistic compulsion. Whenever I'm feeling creatively dry I break out the Japanese textbooks and revise, works like a charm.

That semester of French I mentioned was actually right after two semesters of Chinese. I fucking loved writing out those characters over and over until it looked exactly how I wanted. I think that was a big step for me.
