I don't mind when people ask for opinions. When I first came here, a long time ago, I said "fuck what /fa/ thinks, I like them" a lot, and almost bought a hideous pair of boots. But one time someone gave me a well-explained negative opinion that got me to think. It ate away at me the more I looked at them. In the end I conceded that the anon was right and I didn't buy them. Asking whether something was /fa/ helped me develop my own taste and avoid a bad purchase.

Having your own set of aesthetic values that you bring into your style is great, and everyone should be looking for what they like, not what anyone else likes; but from my own experience I can say that other people can help you get better at evaluating pieces of clothing and deciding whether they fit into your aesthetic vision.

tl;dr: Asking for opinions is not the same as asking other people to decide for you. Asking other people for their opinions can be a very constructive activity.
