What are the reasons that the fashion industry uses extremely skinny models? I'm just interested.

your pic is not the norm

models are usually caricatures. emaciated face, sharp bones, big eyes, tall, fair features etc. they're walking clothes hangers.

the only time skinny models aren't used is when "plus sized" labels find 170lb overweight but proportional women to appeal to fatties. they're always just large enough to fill out their fat distribution but not fat enough to cause the body to lose the usual ratio of fat placement. that body type is not that common, and they're selling to people far fatter than that. it's the same situation as skinny models but with more fat on both sides

Imagine you are putting on a runway show. You got all these curvy models with Beyonce bodies. Now you gotta make sure all the outfits fit when some of the girls are way chestier and others have large ass-ets.

It's easier to just have skinny models to have the clothes drape the way the designer intended.

For haute couture—where gowns sell for >$100,000—skinnier models are definitely preferred for a variety of reasons.

Many measuring and fit sessions are done for each outfit and model in person, and uniformity of size and shape is desired because it means less time and energy for fitting sessions.

Couture outfits use the most luxurious textiles currently developed. An 8.5x11 sized sample piece of beading used in one of Karl Lagerfeld's recent couture collections for Chanel consisted of more than 50 hours of hand beading by a specialized studio. This single sample could cost many hundreds of dollars. Lagerfeld made an entire gown and suit out of the beaded fabric. So skinnier models means less fabric.

And one of my favorite reasons is that if a client wants an outfit from the collection, she can get it for 30% off if she can fit into the one that the skinny, skinny model wore on the runway. Models are professionally skinny, clothes-wearers, so if the model's dress is too small for the client, then she must pay the full price if she wants to wear it.

>> No.6625281

I don't get it either, but maybe they just like how skinny looks?
The models made the decision to be models in the first place and then to go super-skinny after that.
Low bodyfat will bring out your facial features (if they're good) at maximum.

you have to have three seperate fitting sessions for every garment made to be officially recognised as a coutoure house from memory, and everyone working there is at the top of their game

What is a fashionable weight for different heights in woman? I'm 5'10 and I have fluctuated between 115 and 155 as an adult. For some reason from 130-155 I was a size 10, and a 6 at the 115.

What's an aspiring model to do?

Being skinny is just of the traits of being psychically fit and healthy as in low % of body fat

>> No.6627159

you can do more with their silheoutte
their bodies are more graceful naturally
clothes flow around them, instead of on them, with less fabric
they look taller
less BF = nicer facial features, collar bones, etc
androgyny is a good point too

those are the main ones

nataliya gotsiy, she was healthy albeit slim seasons prior to that (s/s 05 i think? long time ago), idk if industry pressured her to lose but she didnt get much work after the media frenzy over that pic.

theres a combination of factors why "clothes hanger" is the model aesthetic but i think its mainly sheer laziness and cost cutting (easier routine if everyone has the samemeasurements) and just residue from the backlash of the bygone era of conventional va-va-voom beauty, now we want genetic oddballs and circus spectacles (wixson, groeneveld, mittendorf, etc).

i think its slowly shifting though, the days of shock value cachectic russian girls are gone. only designer who seems to be brazenly using ultra skinny is slimane now, lol but he's stuck in 2005 anyway.

pic related, inna pilipenko was 92 lbs and 5'10''..........

>>6625466
5'10'' and 115 is pretty standard now.

>> No.6627234

So their bodies don't draw attention away from the clothes. For example OP's pic, if that dress was on a whale you'd be too busy noticing her rolls, if it was on an average woman you'd be too busy looking at her tits. Also, I think shoulders play a big part too, a lot of the high fashion models look like they have really broad shoulders, though not sure is actually broad or just seems broad because they're nice and skinny.

>> No.6629919

normal models don't look like OP's pic.
women like OP's pic are more memorable, more controversial and seem strange or rare.

Is a journalist more likely to talk about some generic designer's new boring line, or the fact that they are "exploiting" a 80 pound woman to promote their clothing?

any media attention is good media attention for an artist.

I think the plus-size scenario you've described is even more deceptive and exploitative than the skinny model thing, as I'd wager that that perfect sweet spot of fat distribution is far rarer and harder to achieve.

Plus, in my view, skinny models aren't ideals to be aspired to - they're archetypes, for reference . Kind of like how, in the Islamic tradition, no-one expects you to turn into the Prophet Muhammad, just that your behavior should skew to emulate his (notwithstanding the shocking failure of many of his so-called followers).

In other words, you don't have to conform to those standards - just approach. These plus-sized models, on the other hand, are designed to be motivational and aspirational.

will ppl not bitch about models if there is a whole range of body types over the industry? can i have my ultra thin models then?

also. I heard once that the very thin women without hips remind gay designers, subliminally or not, of attractive young males and that is why they use them? sounds like bs tho

skinny has its limits even in the fashion industry, when you start looking like you belong in an anorexia youtube montage then it's a problem. very few girls can pull off the "effortlessly thin" look a la vlada roslyakova.
