I think the implication is that a person who leads a lifestyle of a certain base luxury level is the sort of person who can be having a bowl of cereal in the Brooklyn apartment and suddenly decide they'd like to visit Morocco for a few days. Knowing it's a long flight, they pack a book to keep themselves occupied, a sandwich for tummy grumbles and of course their passport. What else would they need? They can pick up the rest on the way.

Rick is implying that his target customer is wealthy enough to make these sorts of choices, but that he as a designer is not going to ignore utility while delivering the level of luxury that type of customer naturally demands.

That's going on, but I think – and remember the source interview – it has more to do with Rick's own lifestyle, the famous studio-gym-restaurant deal, moving neatly and unencumbered through a single city. Book because he's not a philistine, sandwich for midday or post-workout meal, passport because he's an American in Paris and, AFAIK, still hasn't gone for formal citizenship.

He is supposedly in Italy at a factory a couple days most weeks, per another interview I read somewhere.

I completely agree with the Gyakusou bits, though it's nice that it isn't super hyped, pieces are readily available without too much worry about getting sniped on them. Though if they got more hype, then we would get more. It's a bitter-sweet situation, especially since Jun's completely unique work is getting looked over.

Also, I'd go ahead and say I'm 99.9% sure that's Visvim, because that looks like the same set from the lookbook where they introduced grismocs, which I love to death.

One thing I like about techwear is the amount of flexibility you have. It's the art of fashion as problem solving, basically, and you can work in (even keeping in the dominant aesthetic) everything from a cheap mass market windbreaker to something like that, vintage trainers or Bean Boots or Vibram Five Fingers. There's not even a pretending to have rules, just a mood and a practical thoughtfulness, something Rick is obviously big on. The "moving unencumbered through a city" thing is something that actually preoccupies me personally a lot.

Anyway, I'm out for a while after this. More later.

yes. It's pretty obvious Jun Takahashi has been struggling to adopt and evolve past "edgy Japanese punk" designer. He's maturing, and going through big events in his life (turned 40, kid is growing up, he's starting to realize he's mortal). This is all reflected in his work, if you ask me. More conservative designs and safer than traditional Undercover, yet it retains its charm. A/W 13, but I guess you could go back to SS 12 to look at this, is promising because it shows he's comfortable with breathing again, yet he's taken influence from what he's been doing the past couple years. It holds promise for the future of Undercover, with the announcement of diffusion lines and Gyakusou going strong.

Being able to point out flaws is a very good thing, but doesn't make it an objective opinion.
