I think the important part to consider when layering is textures. Finer textures go closer to your body. Reserve coarse textures and loose weaves for your outer layers.

I find the hypocrisy here funny. Everyone claims how there are no rules - which is basically true - but then again, people are being called out for breaking some unwritten rules (lol that guy buttoned up the bottom button of his jacket!) in WAYWT threads.

For most people on /fa/, there definitely are rules, at least on a subconscious level, even though they are to uptight to admit to such a profane thing.
anyway, OP, there's only one rule: everything is allowed as long as it looks good. I've seen pictures of people wear blazers over long coats and it looked awesome. What looks good is of course hard to find out. Does something look bad because people on /fa/ give negative feedback? Probably not, because most of the people here don't know the first thing about fashion and creativity. If something doesn't look good now, it may look good after some months when the public perception has changed (i.e. when a new trend has emerged, like ugly as fuck high top sneakers).
You can do one of two things:
a) ignore other people's opinions and find your own way. If you are an autist, this will result in fedoracore, if you develop a decent set of skills and knowledge, you will be one of those guys whose outfits people on /fa/ try to rip off.
b) Safe route: Start out conservatively and peu à peu become more avant garde, taking notice of how people react to your fits.
