Prep mean upper-class east coast (boston, maine, new england) american style. Or something that tries to emulate those traditions.

So basically the sort of clothes that people wore in the 20th century in ivy league schools and prep academies. And the clothes worn by the families that sent their kids there.


Traditionally, this meant smart-casual sack-suits from J.Press and Brooks Brothers. And bowties. And Varsity sweaters. And boat shoes. And a club ties.

Thing is, the fit of the modern stuff is quite different from what was traditionally associated with prep. Fit is trimmer, colours are louder, and people that never lived anywhere near a yacht or a lobster are wearing boat shoes and nautical paraphernalia.

Basically the whole image has been repackaged and sold to grasping yuppies so that they can pretend they're old money and 'classy'.

The other demographic that has embraced prep at the moment are far-right racist young republicans and conservatives who have a thing for traditional white upper-class america. This is why you hear guys like Glen Beck espousing the virtues of ALL AMERICAN clothiers like Brooks Brothers.


As prep exists today, it's a particularly tacky and contrived subset of menswear.
Still. With all that said and done, the American approach to menswear still has a different slant to it than the British or Italian traditions. At least in so far as suiting.

Dadcore is essentially a clusterfuck of failure (pattern, fit, etc) when someone tries to "dress up" or do traditional menswear.

Preppy is conservative WASP upperclass fashion. Usually bright button downs, chinos, shorts, and sweaters. common shoes are boat shoes, monk strap (although I think this is dying off), and white shoes. Nothing wrong with that, but you may look like a pompous tryhard fuccboi if you don't pull it off.
