How much volume do you need, OP?

Tribal backpacks have all kinds of things wrong with them. One, you're pretending to be something you're not, and not in a fantastical way. Two, you're pretending some toss-off design by some rando who just got their graphic design BA two months ago is some kind of unspecified "tribal."

I was going to suggest one of the small, cheapish Hyperlite models to him if they'll fit what he needs.

So good. Though personally, I doubt a bag without a full, proper frame for the larger sizes.

Yeah, try this.

Cheaper alternatives:

http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/lightweight-travel-pack-backpack?p=48817-0-510
http://www.rei.com/product/809163/rei-stuff-travel-daypack

I've got some experience with the REI, but just played with the Patagonia is a store. Quality should be about the same between these two, with the Patagonia just being a smidge larger with some attachment loops.

If you want something more colorful, just shop around bag companies. Colorful and Timbuk2 are virtually synonymous, but most of these companies will be a little bit better quality:

- Manhattan Portage
- Vaya
- Mission Workshop
- RE Load
- Chrome

And that's all off the top of my head. And, of course, classic JanSport and LL Bean bags often (but not always) have staid styling, but they'll last. I still have and sometimes use whatever the LL Bean flagship was from more than a decade ago, bought when I was in middle school and beaten to hell over the years.

Kind of basic, and belt style closures get annoying.

If you like the look, try to find something with a closure like Billinghams: see those metal things at the top of the straps? They're what actually holds it shut. Lift it out the way to open, fast as anything. The belt mechanism just adjusts how tight the top is held.

It is. Billinghams are probably the zenith of traditional bag design and construction. They're camera bags, now. They began with a British fishing fanatic setting out to build a perfect fisherman's bag decades ago, noticing he was getting a ton of orders from Manhattan, and eventually figuring out that his bags had become a hit among the city's photographers.

He went where the money was, rejiggered the design to be even better for photographers, and grew the company on that.

They are easily repurposable for virtually anything that can fit in them, though, and they simply do not wear out. I'd be seriously impressed if I saw someone trotting around in one they had, say, painted a design over themselves.

I have no other suggestions. There's plenty of rip-offs and stuff made in the vein of Billingham, but they almost always have the cheaper, half-assed belt closure. I remember seeing, a few years ago, a couple other very small British companies that had kept up the mantle of the traditional fishing bag they came from, but I can't for the life of me remember names or if they had the good closure.

In high school, I just carried around an ancient Novell satchel thingy that my dad used to have like it was no one's business. It was the time where I tried to pull off different styles but eventually said 'fuck it' and slapped on whatever I could find, really.
