Alright guys, I have a question about Raw Denim. What is so great about raw denim. I see people talk about it all the time. What are the benefits of having raw denim? Drawbacks? Just curious because I need new jeans right now and I thought this would be a good question. Don't hate me for not knowing. ;_;

Which leads me into another question. Which brand of raw denim is the best quality for your money? That is, it's affordable but has good quality.

It conforms to your body. The fades will be unique. It's a pain to wash. N&F or Nudie is a good entry level brand.

I like it because its cool to make your own fades.

some entry level brands are probably Naked & famous, Gustin, and likely the cheapest TheUnbrandedBrand.

I don't really know your price range but those are probably your best bet because you are more likely to ruin your first pair. Not that its common to do so or anything.

This is probably going to be my next buy, however you'll notice its not selvedge.

k here's the most succinct post on raw denim ever

been wearing nothing but jawnz for like 5 years, been through nudie apc n&f samurai flathead etc

basically the concept is you're buying jeans not for the branding but for the actual integrity of the fabric of the jeans, most selvedge denim is made on old shuttle looms, basically what levis used in the early days when quality was a thing and mass producing wasn't

you're not paying for stupid ass washes and distressing which goes against the idea of jeans- having something that stands up to wear

so basically you get a pair of jeans, a blank slate of rough starchy cotton that you see as a project - from the moment you put them on they begin conforming to your body, stretching in certain areas, fitting you "better" than a normal pair of factory cut denim would.

they fade to your lifestyle, they get marked and ripped as time goes on, and you kind of just make memories in them since they're always on you no matter what you're doing and you wear them for years at a time.

quality is normally much higher and akin to how jeans used to be made - selvedge lines (meaning jeans are cut and sewn from a higher quality cloth instead of industrially stitched up from mass produced cotton), better stitching quality, more rivets, thicker belt loops, you name it.

best starter raw denim if you're just interested in trying some out - unbranded. sub $100, good denim quality, shitty dye job, will fade fast and give you an idea what to expect. naked and famous are a step up but you might get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of selection. wouldn't recommend APC's for the denim or the fade potential but the cuts are the best.... anything $250-350+ is probably a more obscure japanese brand with a cult following and you don't need to worry about that right now.

hope this helps

Holy shit, all these posts were incredibly helpful. Thank you all! Probably going to be picking some unbranded ones soon.

I used to think 60 dollar jeans were expensive. Ha. I can spend as much as I want right now since I have a bit of cash saved up but 100 dollar price range is what I'm aiming for, for right now. It is okay if I get them from urbanoutfitters or should I get them straight from the website?

there's no difference between the one on the UO site and the actual site at all. take a pair of jeans that fits you well (read- comfortably without a belt) and lay them flat on the ground, take a tape measure or ruler and see how wide the waist is.

now, there's two cuts for unbranded- skinny and tapered. if you have skinny legs, go for skinny and either get the size you measured on your jeans, or go down 1 to the size below it.

if you have muscular or just slightly bigger thighs, or you don't want skinny jeans, get the tapered- just size down either 1 or 2 from the size you measured.

the jeans will be slightly tight when you get them, but they'll stretch out within a week or three depending on how much you wear them, and should fit you perfectly after that.

>> No.6556283

If I just want a good pair of jeans but don't give a shit about fades can I just was raws normally?

Badly done washes are lame. There are plenty of brands that do awesome interesting washes and colors; it's just much less common and usually not available at lower price points because of the amount of extra work that is required to get it right.

urban outfitters? like, in store?

if so the selection might be poor but you will be sure about your fit.

you should also look into finding your sizing before ordering online.

get a fabric tape measure or something, and also, don't forget that raw denim will stretch since you aren't washing them much so maybe consider sizing down on the waist. dont size down anywhere else though, if the thighs are too tight it isn't going to stretch much.

look up how much they stretch and compare the jean sizing to your own.

there is a chart at the botton of the webpage
http://theunbrandedbrand.com/products/ub121-skinny-fit-heavyweight-21oz-indigo-selvedge

note that, the particular pair of jeans in the link is very thick. 21oz can get hot in the summer.

zzz didn't say anything about washing because I don't wash my jeans according to a cycle

to the OP, there's absolutely nothing wrong with washing your jeans often (read-monthly-bimonthly), just know that you won't get as contrasty fades or changes in the color tones of the denim, instead the jeans will just lose color all over each wash. usually people hold out 6 months before their first wash, but that's not a hard rule since a lot of people wear their jeans differently (think about skateboarding in them every day vs. taking the bus to campus and sitting through a couple of classes every day and then coming home and taking them off.)

basically you should wash them when you see color change, because the wash will accentuate what you already have - it won't make fades magically appear if there are none to start with. I wear my jeans hard and don't have a problem holding out 8-10 months before first wash, and then washing them maybe 2-5 times in the next year or so. after the first wash, the next ones are significantly less important - do it whenever you want, or when they're dirty or smell too bad.

as far as denim quality goes, in my personal experience n&f have lasted way longer than anything sub $200. my n&f got zero holes in a year and a half, and my apc's fell apart, not to mention that they feel like thick construction paper on your legs after you wash them for the first time considering they're basically a starch-denim-starch sandwich. and that was 2 years ago since I retired mine and they've since gone up in price from $135 to $185+ for the same if not worse quality. ridiculous.

nudies are just hypebeast raw denim imo, can't stand the obnoxious orange stitching everywhere and the denim weight is super thin, you're just asking to run through those. I can't justify the prices, but the cuts are great - I tried on a pair of thin finn's in store once and they fit beautifully, I can't argue with that. they were my first pair of raws but definitely not the best I've had.

once you get over 200 you can probably find a pair of pbj's, sams, or flatheads on sufu for $200-250 if you're lucky enough to find a pair in your size...

all of this said I'm sitting at my computer wearing a pair of black petit standards that I use to relax and run errands in so I mean take what you will from my opinion (got em for $60, can't say no to that)

that's a good description but selvage lines are not indicative of any quality. any fabric has selvage ends, meaning the top and bottom of a bolt of fabric are finished. making jeans with selvage lines on the outside seam is easy. it just means a slightly less efficient way of laying out pattern pieces must be employed.

It prevents the fabric from falling apart somewhat.

but its not really the selvedge line that makes the quality, it's the loom. and all selvedge is made using a better process
