What's your guys' s thoughts on moccasins for men?

>> No.6546245

I seriously need a pair.
OP what pair do you have in mind? I'm planning to buy some soon.

I was thinking Sperry moccasins, just cause they're pretty affordable.

They look pretty nice, I've been looking at Minnetonka's Moccassins, they're like 40 bucks a pop and I'm really leaning towards em, you should check them out lol

Yea, but only because I need summer shoes.

I was thinking about buying Minnetonka moccs too, but I'm skeptical about quality with something that cheap.

true.
how would you go about in sizing?
i'm like a size 9.5/10 in vans, what do you think would be a good size?
i hear people buy a size smaller to stretch into them.

would really only consider buying moccasins from a native tradepost or like an old guy who's been handmaking them since the 70s.

all moccasins are not born equal

cheap synthetic-lookin moccasins are ugly as fuck, I think of teenage girls when I see those.

but if you go for the real shit, they can be nice. russell moccasin does some good stuff.

also worth checking out are brands like yuketen which make some neat-looking camp mocs. pic related.

other companies that do some interesting boat shoes/moccasin type shoes are new england outerwear, quoddy, oak street bootmakers, rancourt & company, blanking on others but I'm probably forgetting something

in general if your "moccasin" is made outside of north america by a large corporation you're missing the fucking point and you shouldn't even be wearing them

granted I don't know about a lot of native americans making moccasins, but at least get a pair that's handsewn by someone earning a decent wage

I have two pairs, and I'm pretty happy with them. vibram sole trail oxford in loden, and vibram sole camp boot brown

the shoes are TTS and the boots are a half size big, I recommend sizing down a half size

chromexcel is obv. a nice leather, stitching is pretty legit, only complaint is that in my boots the leather insole is sort of moving over time, it's pushed forward in the shoe and I don't know why but there it is

they sold me some laces via email and I'm pretty happy about that, their laces are nice

in general the shoes are well-made, comfortable, I have no complaints. so if you like how it looks in the pic I doubt you'll be disappointed

as for styling, it all depends on how you wear it. I think camp mocs are cool when you wear them right but if you fuck them up you can end up looking dadcore as hell

I wish I could put it into words. It's easy to see when someone's doing it wrong, but it's not always easy to avoid making mistakes yourself. Sorry that I can't give a useful answer on this one. Just be cautious.

>>6547710
here's a pic of mine, might as well turn my trip on

you can see how the soles are sort of moving outward in the way the front of the shoe seems to be leaning outward. I'm not sure how that will develop over a longer period of time, but I'm hoping it won't turn out to be a serious problem.

I'm pretty happy with them for the most part.

company that makes soles. the white sole you see on some of the boots in this thread is the vibram christy, one of their more iconic soles (standard red wing soles are often confused for vibram christy soles but are not in fact made by vibram)

>>6548208
I'm not going to say you're wrong, because they do appeal to that crowd; the material and quality are really nice. whether or not that is aesthetically interesting depends on what kind of person you are and what kind of things you like.

I'm someone who doesn't buy into some of the high-minded pretense of designer fashion, and who likes some degree of utilitarianism and traditionalism, while also having a real distaste for (bordering on neurosis about) the aesthetic results of mass production, popular culture, and urban sprawl.

(It's a bit ironic that I'm saying this on the internet)

So as a result of that mindset I like things that feel less synthetic. Feeling a nice leather is for me just a different experience from feeling (for example) padded sneakers. I like things that feel substantive. I don't like the abstract idea of a sneaker whose production history is unknown to me; a cloudy mix of cheap foreign labour, synthetic materials, and corporate decision-making. I know I sound like someone's conservative grandpa, but I like the idea of a smaller business with unionized workers making a shoe by hand with good leather. I like that I know everything about how my shoes were made. I feel really connected to them.

I feel exactly the same way you do. I try to stay away anything synthetic and try to buy from companies who don't rape small children of their lives to save pennies. Also I enjoy buying vintage because you know that it's probably a quality product if it's lasted that long.

I wish I was that good about it. I just don't put the name on my mediocre posts. I go into stealth mode when I want to post something less considered.

I try not to post things that are completely worthless but I sometimes post things that I'm not necessarily eager to put my name to.
