A blazer is the only truly essential thing I can come up with.

I don't think there's any one essential shoe or pant or shirt but when it comes to jackets, a 2 button notched lapel blazer is pretty much the alpha and omega of menswear. Should also have at least 2 interior pockets and be a multi-seasonal weight. It's probably the one thing I wouldn't be able to survive without. Instantly puts you ahead of pretty much everyone else style wise and you can throw it on over top of almost anything. Also tons of pockets, I legitimately use every pocket in my blazers and it's stupidly practical. Cool, sleek, classic, I dunno I don't think there's anything else like it.

I used to wear zip hoodies all the time and think they we're really essential but now I just wear a blazer whenever I would normally wear a zip hoody and it looks infinitely better. You can pair it with jeans or trousers, collared shirts or crew / vnecks, sneakers or dress shoes, eliminates the need for another jacket / coat except in the coldest or hottest weather.

Yeah that's my essential.

Label Under Construction, they're the guys with the crazy long tags, also I got the pic from here:

70% silk, totally insane. CCP is cool too though, Ann Dem is actually my favourite just from experience her blazers fit me to a T so it's really hard to break away with that in mind. If I bought another blazer in the near future it would probably be Comme just to break up the monotony. I really love the philosophy behind the brand too, the idea that everyone strives for perfection and it can be insanely daunting and draining to always try to look as perfect as possible. Where as with Comme the idea is that the garments will always look inherently flawed or imperfect, that's why Comme is so easy to wear, you don't need to worry if it's pressed perfectly or fits you spot on. It's designed right from the beginning to deliberately have a misshapen sleeve or permanent crease in it. Maybe the buttons and buttonholes don't align perfectly or it's missing a pocket flap. You can seriously just throw it on and say fuck it. Dunno if I could be a true disciple and wear it head to toe every day of the week but every now and then I really get in the mood for clothing that sort of ignores rules and norms, I have enough totally conventional stuff at this point.

>can you provide any guidelines to assure that the blazer I purchase is casual?

I guess what I was trying to say with that last post is there is no such thing as a casual or dressy blazer. There are just blazers and you can make them as casual or as dressy as you want depending on what you pair them with. If you want a really versatile one I'd say go with a 2 button notched lapel with flap pockets.

As for the second part of your question my recommendation is always buying second hand if you're strapped for cash:

Auction Sites:

http://www.ebay.ca/
http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/

Consignment Sites:

http://global.rakuten.com/
http://www.guyiconsignment.com/
http://re-porter.ca/

Online Forums:

http://www.stylezeitgeist.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=50
http://www.styleforum.net/f/6654/marketplace

Also Yoox can sometimes be alright, they buy excess stock, samples, and factory seconds from a lot of solid designers, sometimes it's really whack stuff but occasionally you can strike gold:

http://www.yoox.com/

$200 is pretty low but doable if you really hunt, I've seen tons of awesome designer blazers in the re-sale market for $300 though. Second hand I really feel is the way to do it, you can get a $800 blazer for $200 where as if you buy retail you're going to be getting a $200 blazer for $200 unless you hit a crazy sale which I would recommend you watch out for as well but I dunno if blazers ever really reach the deep discounts also there's way too many stores for me to list anyway.

How do I make a blazer casual?

I am assuming that depends on what is worn underneath it? But can you give examples?

Right now I am thinking underneath a blazer:
t-shirts + jeans = casual
oxford shirt + chinos = dressy
