What does /fa/ smell like?

Can anyone recommend a good cologne that's not extremely shitty cheap stuff but not super expensive either?

Pic related, it's what I wear now but I'm almost out.

Not OP, but super expensive to me is more than $50 bucks, maybe even $40. For cologne that is.

something old school would be Agua Lavanda Puig, BUT it's gotta be in the glass bottle, about 150 mL iirc. the other stuff is more of an aftershower splash and is really weak.
fragrantica can help, and TJ Maxx etc sometimes has nicer stuff for cheap.

Yeah, let's say super expensive is $50.

OP there are lots of good cheap colognes out there. pick a genre or a note and i'll do my best to help you out. there are lots of different genres or types, and since the industry has exploded in the last 10 or so years many houses have popped up that actually make it their mission to defy genre or create fragrances without traditional notes.

this will help you start

take with a grain of salt. they are obviously shortcuts, which involves some distortion, and some people have different classification systems.

eg: http://theperfumedcourt.com/fragrance_families.aspx

not to mention that some fragrances, like many from comme des garcons' garage, would be unclassifiable according to these categories.

>>6435926
it's just straight-up aquatic fragrances. according to fragrantica, yes, its a genre, but other people would just say 'aquatic.' i don't really like genre classification myself, but its helpful for beginners to wrap their minds around fragrance. i personally would just list off the main 2 to 4 notes of any given fragrance. for example, you might put 1740 into the 'leather' genre but you'd miss on the most important part of the composition: the labdanum, immortelle, and elemi resin.

i actually i just looked up 1740 on fragrantica and its under "oriental woody." wouldn't be my choice at all. consider it an example of how this system of classification fails. sort of like trying to group all music into genres of "electronic," "rock," "pop," "metal," etc. it can be misleading

Depends where it is. If it's somewhere nice/dinner then I'd go Andy Tauer's L'Air du Desert Marocain. It's relatively popular on here but still obscure irl. Definitely get a tester first though.
But if you're actually going to a nightclub nobody cares, thats whats good about The Dreamer; it has that appeal without being bandwagoned by the sweaty indian wearing paco rabanne crowd nahmsayin

yeah..... dont wear LDDM to a dinner. it has beastmode projection and longevity. the spice notes in it may offend other people who are eating, too. they want to smell their food not your cologne.

if i was gonna wear LDDM to a restaurant it would be one spray on the chest. hopefully my shirt etc. is enough to hold it back, but i probably wouldnt risk it at all.

LDDM is something where when you wear it, you can walk into a group of 10 people or something and they will pick up on it and ask/compliment straight away. usually compliment because that shit is a straight up masterwork.

I am so sick of citrus and watery fruits. I have a bottle of Versache pour homme which I purcahsed as a cologne newbie that I can't even wear. I actually get really bad headaches from it and a bunch of other fruit and water scents, even in small quantities.

I really love Viktor and Rolfe Antidote (which has been my go to for about a year) and I just got Kuros Body. At first all I could smell from the Kuros Body was anise but it reacts great with my own scent and a small amount hangs around close to the skin for a whole day.

I think that asking people what cologne you should wear is a huge mistake. A lot of highly rated stuff is actually terrible and everyone will react differently. You need to find something that smells good to you all day and more importantly something that is innofensive in your climate, in the context of what people around you are used to, and that works with your own scent.

Never blind buy. The only way to do it is to try, try, try.

Gourmand - Gourmands are closely related to orientals, but differ in a key way; they are meant to smell delicious/edible. Gourmands are even harder than orientals to wear in warm weather (they're almost always heavy and sweet), so these really should only be worn in cool/cold weather.

Examples:
Hermes Ambre Narguile: Amber, benzoin, labdanum, musk, vanilla, caramel, honey, sugared tonka bean, grilled sesame seeds, cinnamon, rum, coumarine and white orchid.
Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau: Bread note, spices, licorice, apricot, immortelle, sandalwood, woody notes, and amber.
Lostmarch Lann-Ael: Buckwheat, cereals, milk, apple, and vanilla.

Chypre - Meaning "cypress" got it's start from Coty's Chypre in 1917. They are primarily built on a structure that contains citrus top-notes (almost always bergamot), a heart of labdanum (a brown resin with a leathery/amber aroma), and base notes based around oak moss and patchouli. Depending on the notes added, the scent can then be put into more specific categories like floral chypre, woody chypre, etc.

Examples:
Guerlain Mitsuoko: Bergamot, peach, rose, iris, clove, jasmine, vetiver, oakmoss, and labdanum.
Tom Ford Noir de Noir: Saffron, black rose, black truffle, vanilla, patchouli, oud wood, and tree moss.
Hermes Poivre Samarcande: Oak, chinese moss, green notes, caraway, paprika, chili pepper, patchouli, pepper, and cedar.

>> No.6438664

Fougère - one of the most common types of cologne. The word means "fern-like" and is given to any fragrance exhibiting a "fresh" feel. The umbrella is quite large and the fragrances can go from very fresh like Davidoff's Cool Water to Woody and Ambery like Caron's L'Anarchiste.

Examples:
Yves Saint Laurent's L'Homme : Bergamot, Calone, Ginger, Basil, Cedar, Violet leaf, Vetiver and Tonka Bean
Dolce & Gabbana's Pour Homme : Bergamot, Mandarin, Orange, Neroli, Lemon, Lavender, Sage, Tarragon, Cardamom, Pepper, Sandalwood, Cedar, Tonka bean, Musk, Tobacco, Iris, Tonka Bean
Carolina Herrera's Herrera for Men : Fern, Clove, Lavender, Amber, Tobacco, Geranium, Sandalwood, Cedar, Musk

Oriental - Oriental fragrances exhibit woody/ambery qualities, and as such, are perfect for Fall and Winter. For lighter ones, you may be able to get away with them on spring and summer nights. "Oriental" comes from the idea that the fragrances bring to mind the middle/far east back in the days of the spice trade.

Examples:
Dolce & Gabbana's The One : Grapefruit, Coriander, Basil, Cardamon, Ginger, Orange Blossom, Cedar, Ambergris, Tobacco.
Gucci's Envy for Men : Opoponax, Incense, Patchouli, Amber, Musk, Cedar, Cardamom, Anise, Ginger, Nutmeg, Pimento.
John Varvatos' John Varvatos : Medjool, Date Fruit, Mediterranean Herbs, Tamarind Tree Leaves, Coriander Seed Templar, Clary Sage Flower, Ajowan, Auramber, Vanilla CO2, Balsams, Eaglewood, Vanilla, Black Leather.

>> No.6438670

>>6438666

Aquatic - As you might be able to guess, aquatics are meant to emulate the scent of the ocean. Some may be a bit more poetic in their approach (by that I mean they don't actually smell like the ocean), whereas other scents take a more literal direction. The scent gets its aquatic scent from a key synthetic ingredient: Calone.

Examples:
Issey Mayake's L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme : Yuzu, Cypress, Coriander, Mandarin, Clary Sage, Fresh Verbena, Blue Water Lily, Nutmeg, Saffron, Bourbon Geranium, Ceylonese Cinnamon.
Bvlgari's Aqva Pour Homme : Mandarin, Petitgrain, Santolina, Posidonia, Mineral Amber and Clary Sage.
Kenzo's L'Eau par Kenzo pour Homme : Yuzu, Ho Leaf, Lotus Leaf, Aquatic Mint, Green Pepper, White Musk, Tobacco, Amber, Musk, Indian Sandalwood, Haitian Vetiver, Cypriol.

Floral - Although we tend to associate women with so called "flowery" scents, men can wear them just as easily. Of course, it takes a more adventurous man with an open mind. Floral notes in men's fragrances as a whole are not uncommon. Fragrances that belong to the floral group that are actually considered men's fragrances, on the other hand, are quite uncommon. Common notes: Lily, Iris, and Lavender.

Examples:
Givenchy's Insensé : Blackcurrant, Mandarin, Basil, Magnolia, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Lentiscus, Balsam Fir.
Kenzo's Power : Bergamot, Coriander, Cardamom, Jasmine, Rose, Freesia, Tolu Balsam, Cedar, and Labdanum.
Jean Paul Gaultier's Fleur de Male : Orange Blossom, Petitgrain leaf, Coumarin, Fern.

Do you guys use deodorant and cologne?
I'm currently only using deo as I ran out of the cologne I got for christmas a little while ago, but I'm unsure of when it is appropriate to use one or the other. I've just been using deodorant for when I know I'm going to be sweating/active, like gym days, and only using cologne after showers before I go out at night.
Do you all just wear cologne all the time and not use deo or what? Where is the perfect balance

Also is there deodorant that is paired with certain cologne, like their scents accent each other or match each other so you can wear both or something
