I don't do custom tribal work, there's another guy in our shop that does it though. I'll do flash work though because the money is piss easy for slapping a stencil on and filling with solid black. If some retard wants it done it's up to them, i'm not going to turn down money because i don't like something - if i did i'd be fucking skint all the time.

You seem to have completely missed the point.

I said i CAN turn down work if i want; but i'm not going to turn down every customer wanting simple styles that i can do without any problems just because it's not the style i like - i still have bills to pay. I don't do realism work because it's not a style i'm familiar with. You can't just take a stencil for realism and fill it in, you need to be good with shading and have experience with that style so i'm not going to do something that will come out badly and leave a customer with bad ink. It gives me a bad reputation and the shop i work in. I am a self employed tattooist so it's up to me what work i do. If a customer asks at the desk for realism work they'd normally be booked in with another artist anyway but if i'm taking the consultation i'll run through placing, price & time and have another artist look over it.

It's different with tribal flash work. If a customer walks in, points to flash work i can transfer the stencil on and fill it in, it's easy work because you don't need any experience with tribal unless you're doing custom work.

it's not so much the yakuza as much as it's viewed as you've willfully branded yourself as a social deviant, you've marked yourself where other people can see, permenantly, so there must be a reason you would do something so brazen.

This makes people reluctant to be around you because they don't know WHY you did it. It doesn't make sense to the common person to mark yourself like a gangster would. They don't know if you're a troublesome person or not, so they just refuse you service on the offchance you would cause trouble.

There is SOME leeway, if you know a guy who knows a guy they'll show you places where you can go and they won't care so much, but generally speaking, you can't join a gym, or go to hot springs, or swim in public pools, or go to certain clubs.

No matter how many Ink magazine articles you read about tattoos being acceptable in modern culture, that attitude largely exists only in some parts of the west. Elsewhere in the world, they're only going to close doors for you.
