Most people aren't getting the thread. These are must-haves (though you could get away with just charcoal slacks), also arguably the casual sneakers.

But suede shoes? Not just suede shoes but suede chukkas and brogues? A bomber jacket? All that stuff is heavily dependent on your style. I don't own any suede shoes and there is no conceivable circumstance in which I would, personally, ever buy brogues. Bombers are one style of mid to heavy weight jacket; they're good and trendy right now, but there's nothing sacrosanct or essential about them.

Joan Didion’s Packing List

To Pack and Wear:

2 skirts
2 jerseys or leotards
1 pullover sweater
2 pair shoes
stockings
bra
nightgown, robe slippers
cigarettes
bourbon
bag with: shampoo, toothbrush and paste, Basis soap, razor, deodorant, aspirin, prescriptions, Tampax, face cream, powder, baby oil

To Carry:

mohair throw
typewriter
2 legal pads and pens
files
house key

This is a list which was taped inside my closet door in Hollywood during those years when I was reporting more or less steadily. The list enabled me to pack, without thinking, for any piece I was likely to do. Notice the deliberate anonymity of costume: in a skirt, a leotard, and stockings, I could pass on either side of the culture. Notice the mohair throw for trunk-line flights (i.e. no blankets) and for the motel room in which the air conditioning could not be turned off. Notice the bourbon for the same motel room. Notice the typewriter for the airport, coming home: the idea was to turn in the Hertz car, check in, find an empty bench, and start typing the day’s notes.

No. There is no universe in which fucking brogues and chukkas are essential. They're both embellishments over the oxford, which is essential, for the same reason a white full button front shirt and wool dress pants are: they're simple, ubiquitous to the point of being absolutely labile in signification, and they are the only things that will do in certain situations everyone will come across in life, unless they're Steve Jobs or something and can function as a sapient middle finger with impunity. (For the record, in my own taste, I hate brogues and love chukkas, especially heavier chukkas.)

Ask yourself this: what kind of situation would someone not be able to carry without a brogue or a chukka? What kind of outfit is it necessary for that nothing else can be reasonably substitued in? Any time you could wear the brogues you could wear a plain oxford or a plain blucher; usually you could also sub in loafers. Any time you could wear those chukkas you could sub in any other variety of slightly formal boot, or any kind of low-top laced shoe, and frequently loafers. They're an affectation, a choice - which is great! But by definition not essential.

A quick note on the oxford that might prove illuminating:

>>6388457
Oxfords started with students at guess where as a more casual alternative to the then-mandatory day dress boots; they were the Adidas velcro sandals of their day.

Through historical accident and the influence of a few key figures, it came to pass that for some reason they are acceptable in both the stiuations where one would've worn dress boots (suits, the antecedents of modern black tie) and (white tie antecedents) where one would've worn the daintier, more formal court shoes/opera pumps, which to the contemporary eye look rather like women's flats with a ribbon on the front, with a small heel in the back added.

For personal and not entirely visual aesthetic reasons, I actually prefer to go with chelsea boots for the more casual situations, and pumps for white tie, but I would never call either of those essential. Something else could easily sub in - oxfords, always, or depending on the exact more casual situation, anything from laced dress boots (for instnace, chukkas, ones like the ones you posted to more versatile (and, for the record, IMO inferior) desert boot style ones) a pair of bluchers to loafers to skimpy moccasins.

Copping shoes of those varieties is a great idea and often they'll work better with an outfit than a pair of oxfords - but no one is going to have them all. Starting out, when someone isn't going to have a well formed conception of their style yet, the shoe to get is the best black calfskin oxford the buyer can afford. It'll go at least tolerably with anything. The next shoe to get is probably a brown leather loafer, suitable for more casual suiting.

>> No.6388469

>>6388464

This new-wardrober could, if he wanted, take my approach and sub in a pair of dress boots and pumps for the oxfords, but that probably wouldn't be a good idea. Too many different varieties of dress boots for him to have a handle on which suits him, and dropping the money for a good pair of pumps that are only suitable to wear on the rare white tie outing is just not something that's going to happen. And he's probably not going to have the confidence in his style and knowledge to pull them off, anyway.

This kind of stuff doesn't have to be dadcore. I think the great thing about real basics, real essentials is that they can fit into any wardrobe, and can come in handy when required.

Personally, my own style is probably closest to techy streetwear of all the archetypes that get flung around, but I get a lot of influence from "gothninja," historical equivalents of techwear, and traditional Italian and American Prep style, too.

Any one of those styles, in fact any style I can think of, could deploy appropriately designed (note uuuuhhhh's "tailored however you like" on the dress pants - that's *everything*) could deploy this kind of stuff: white button up, oxfords, wool dress pants (shit, they could have a dropcrotch down to the knees, if someone was so inclined), pair of jeans, the grey heathered tee someone mentioned, a casual blazer, a waist-level jacket of some kind that's not a blazer (a fleece? A bomber jacket? A cableknit cardigan? A Perfecto-styled leather jacket? A moto-styled leather jacket? A silk, asymmetric take on a Harrington? A seam taped nylon hoody? Etc. etc. etc.), a pair of sneakers of some kind (Flyknits? Achilleses? Geobaskets? All Stars? Air Yeezys?)

Saul is nearly single handedly responsible for fucking up so much of human culture. He's not one to quote, especially invoking this tired and much-abused "but then I grew up" trope. It doesn't really describe good development in a life well at all.

Agreed, I think. I'd probably just specify "dark jeans" and let people figure it out based on what else they like. Someone going for Hedicore would probably be better off with black jeans, for instance.

TBH I'm pretty clueless about jeans. I like seeing what other people do with them, but they've never felt right on me and I haven't done more than try a pair on since the third grade.
