The value of the item is predetermined by bidders. If I choose I will pay up to 150 USD for an item it makes no difference what the bids before me are. If two people want an item and both of their limits are 150 USD then naturally they will try to 1 up on each other towards the end. If two people bid and one person's limit 80 and the others 150 then the price of that item is already pre determined above 80 USD we just don't know until the auction is over.

There was an item I was bidding on the other day that retails in the low 200s, and considering the condition this was in, as a seller I'd consider $125-150 or so reasonable. I'd have started it with a minimum bid of $90 or so, and done a buy it now for $150.

Some asshats ginned it up a little in a bidding war early, and stopped it in the forties, for some reason. I put in $72 as a maximum as a snipe within the last few seconds; someone else put in $73. (The minimum increase was more than a dollar, so he punched it in like that, instead of simply upping my bid.)
