I disagree. When I think a basic outfit, I just think something simple to wear, direct, no-fuss. That can be a white Hanes tee, pair of standard medium wash Levis, and some Converse or boat shoes, or it can be head to toe Rick Owens. (One of the great things about Rick as a designer is how compatible and made for basicness his clothes are. The studio-gym-dinner with the book-passport-sandwich deal.) The best basic outfits, to me, usually do involve texture play and some excellent piece selection.

Here's one of my favorite ever. This is about as simple as you can get- black tee, black elastic waist bottom, black Wayfarers - which would be great by itself, but it's elevated because she threw on this awesome, fancy, textured jacket and a flotsam pile of bracelets. Somehow they make it seem more simple, more carefree, at the same time they're adding interest.
