I've been trawling around the net and I've got a new batch of pieces for our nascent look. In addition to sharing these, I'm going to further the notion of appropriating garments from unconventional sources.
For a little while, we'll step out of the fashion world entirely, and into the realm of upmarket tactical gear. I'd also like to discuss DIY distressing and I'll be pointing out a few vintage garments that can help reinforce the notion of aging utility in an otherwise tech-heavy fit.

Once again, keep in mind that we're still defining what this look is and isn't - you may need to use your imaginations in order to put some of these pieces together in a context they were never intended for.

Last night I had a dream that I was living in an alternate future where everybody was wearing nxtlvl astronaut inspired pieces along with windbreakers and neat boots, but all our computers still ran on spools of tape and CDs and HDDs didn't exist. The architecture was really white, orange and brown and very angular. I was so sad when I woke up.

6302369

Someone asked about basics in the last thread, and so I present the Ardennes Cold Weather System combat hoodie. Thumb holes, hood and a built in balaclava. It's also thin enough to wear under another hoodie or a parka for a double-layered effect that evokes the close-fitting hooded undergarments most astronauts wear beneath their pressure suits.

This is a good place to jump into some of the tactical stuff. There's a whole market out there full of well made and often exciting looking garments that you won't find in any store because they're completely outside of the fashion world. Their target market: Private soldiers, security and SpecOps.

>>6302329

A lot of the garments I present in this category are going to be in camo, but that's just how they're marketed - the demographic wants camo. They're always sold in green and black solids, sometimes in grey or tan.
These pants zip open on the bottom & I think they have articulated knees, among other features.

u need to look into ski brands, specifically off-piste & racing-oriented ones. i posted a fit a while ago w/ this columbia turtleneck ive had for ages thats fleece-lined & wicking w/ overlong sleeves, thumbholes, and a neck that you can also pull up over your face as a cowl.

if u want to go really high end u can find some brands out there doing really amazing stuff. jackets w/ foam molding to increase your aerodynamics, compression baselayers to take the stress off yr knees, backcountry jackets w/ vitals monitoring and distress signals built in, etc. integrated cowls, partial & full gloves, n pockets for your mp3 player w/gesaffelstein on it are almost a given

The urban lumberjacks, the rugged outdoorsmen, the streetwear enthusiasts, the avant-garde crowd - everyone can play. As long as we remember some of the style's key components (here, the sectional look, the color palette and the notion of yesteryear's techwear), we can venture into territory that seems unlikely at first but will later make perfect sense within the context of a complete outfit.

Some of you are probably wondering why the hell I would bother including this.
Because it's a cheap shoe & it has more or less the right profile, one could easily stand to buy a pair and have a go at them with acetone, fine sandpaper and 'Fusion" spray paint (which is great on plastics). A wire brush would probably be helpful as well. I imagine the path to take would involve abrading the shoe first, painting it white or black and then removing as much paint as possible with the acetone. The cracks, crevices & abraded areas would soak up the color and result in unique patina. Abrading the shoe would be best done while wearing it, so you know where to highlight naturally occurring creases and stress points. A different solvent might be a better choice, I don't rightly know yet.
I'm only pitching out ideas here, this could very well look like shit but I'm interested in experimenting and I know that more than a handful of us have dabbled.

I know we all hate graphic tees, I personally don't wear them but I might make an exception if there was basic chemistry and a unique end product involved. See if you can get a hold of something vague in a bin at a thrift store. Not even a full-on graphic tee necessarily but the sort of thing that gets handed out to new employees in some horrid place with a massive turnover rate. Maybe a single word or a very simple logo on the chest that's nebulous enough to take in no particular context at all. Then check out some of the instructions here: http://www.founditemclothing.com/itgoesto11/archives/6194
It shows you how to do Pic Related, in great detail. If I was going to do this, I'd probably want to erode as much of the image as possible, leaving only faint outlines.

One technique I've seen referenced in costuming is known as "Dirty Water". It can provide fades to fit your body exclusively. First, you mix some white or grey waterbase acrylic in a bucket of water. Put the garment on and have a friend slowly empty the bucket on you. Wear the garment until it air dries. If you want to experiment with it, try using a cheap milsurp jacket made with cotton.

I realize that this sort of thing is a touchy topic, but with a bit of work and time, I think one of us could make something very interesting with a lot of mass appeal that manages to somehow transcend the role of graphic tee. Perhaps stenciling something over the top of an existing image that's been faded, degraded and shredded?

I want to stress that a single interesting vintage garment can go a long way towards adding depth and gravity to this look. Don't be afraid to take things out of the context they were devised in - Other garments in your fit can be used to help translate their symbols while retaining the comforting truth of their age.

Assuming I could find this and it fit, I would pair it with blue or light olive pants and the palladium paliabrouse. Not everything needs to be techy, and picking up a battered old bit of workwear as a smock could add a lot of character and humanity to your fit.

One thing that was great about the costumes in movies like ALIEN was how lived in everything looked. You're cooped up on a long range scouting assignment for years, you live hard and things break down as you go through the motions of existence crammed into a tin can. A few things, but I'm still too green to make anything major in the purchase dept. I have tracked down some double zip flight pants tho, real ones, in my waist size, and I'm thinking I should pull the trigger.
I have the jacket version of >>6302316 and it's really nicely distressed but I think it doesn't work the look as well as the pants. I should've copped the pants, man. I was right there.
I do have some tactical pants w/ a curved leg, extended crotch, twist seams et al. I've got more than a few shoes that work with the look, and although I haven't implemented this style as intensely as I hope to, personal fashion is a tricky ship to steer, you know? I'm trying to avoid the mistakes I made when I was really green and not buy things without doing my homework.
This young style we're figuring out has already affected my purchasing choices, tho, and was the proverbial final nail in my recent decision to cop a piece I'd had my eye on for a while.

You're right, but it's an easy catch-all until we find something better. I mean, there are definitely words that bounce around my head when I think of the look, and I'm sure folks must share some of them. Space and decay are a great start.

Deep
Space
Decay
Mechanical
Faded
Technician
Flight
Survivor
Padding
Technical
Forgotten
Future
Battered
Sectional
Utility

Obviously every garment doesn't need to hit all these points and there are probably a lot more points, but it helps to hit a few.

I feel as if success will be achieved if we figure out some sort of balance between modern technical and vintage/retrofuture accents in order for it to work.

But at the same time, this isn't the only way that success could be achieved, there are so many more ways to casually throw your own wardrobe in this direction already, and that was the first thing I thought about when I saw banana post about the relationship between anne hathaway's sneaker's and t-shirt in pic-related.
References to this style can be achieved casually, effortlessly. People are already doing it, have been doing it, but they're all doing it in weaker, watered-down forms. What we want to do is seize upon the spirit of these tiny stylistic nods and amplify it 100x without straying too far outside the bounds of respectability. Not just yet, at least.

exactly. of course you can incorporate this style in the direction of worn and weathered gear, but who says you can take it in the direstion of sex and style? i'm talking lunar cosmopolitan

yes in Aliens functional clothing was crafted, but who's to say in that universe there werent any people exploring that necessary equipment and adding some more carnal touches to it? functional space clothes for the young people. transparent areas which reveal skin even when blasting Xenomorphs :)

Pic related is a nifty high collared tech coat that's got well placed reflective bits and is more affordable than going straight to Musto.
There is, however, that unfortunate word on the chest. Sigh.

>>6303310
I think this look should in some ways constrain our humanity, and that sex appeal is irrelevant or should shine through the garments regardless. The wear and tear/distressing shows in return how we humanize the things that would dehumanize us.
That said, I think that lace bomber I posted is an eloquent and reserved sexy, as are several other garments in this and the previous thread. It doesn't really matter, though - nothing's sexier than being capable. IMO - if there's any sex appeal in this look then it's going to be a by-product of looking like a competent survivor.

that's not a "lunarcore" (or whatever) look, though. It's just some chick in red pants who happens to be giving a nod to her tshirt via her shoes.
See, the t-shirt actually changes the shoe, a strapped converse into an astronaut boot. Why? because it sets the stage, because it uses symbols to call up memories in you and translate a velcro converse into a space shoe. Because a velcro converse looks close enough already. Because a velcro converse is kind of like retro-tech in and of itself.

So what I'm saying is that we want to seize upon that little idea and blow it up into something bigger, see what other garments we can recontextualize, look for garments that set the stage, that interpret and translate symbols for us. Tech-heavy surplus is good for that, it's full of codes.

I listened to it, twice, and I think it's a very innovative approach to house. It'd very stripped down, slightly off beat and moves in an interesting way. Reminds me of a few things on the old ForceTracks label, maybe some parts of Luomo... or like Drill&Bass with the intensity down at pleasant levels. From a programming perspective, he's got some tracks that would be a lot of fun to play and probably offer a good amount of room for improvisation throughout. I can hear him twisting knobs.

I don't really keep up with house much anymore, so I'm not sure how innovative this sound is, but as a style it works and is probably portable.

Re: sex appeal, imagine a mesh (=see through) shirt like this, a pair of (and this is me free-associating off my own style, this isn't the most lunar thing possible) slim or skinny fit wide wale cords, preferably in something like a technical nylon blend, tucked into a pair of booty sneakers or pull-on boots.

Layer the mesh shirt, possibly in a less drab color, under any of these:

>>6302411
Takes it basic, practical, tactical.

>>6302520
Gives it a more laid-back, James Perse 2059 vibe

>>6302554
Amps up the lunarness, would give an interesting texture play between the metallic and the mesh

>>6302573
Would just be awesome as hell, striking and decayed, futuristic and somehow relaxed and good for an Indian Summer morning walk all at once

>>6302730
Especially with the cords, a perfect remix of the English Country Gentleman look. A tailored athletic mesh popover woven of subdued but variegated colors would be perfect.

>>6302865
Always open, workwear-y, streetwear-y, the mesh and shoes catapulting this out very wearably into the future

>>6302908
Also v. British, obviously, buy in a different way. Harder to pull off with the mesh, I think.

>>6302917
Same as the other Y-3 sportcoat, but more futuristic and I think better.

>>6302967
I'm not really sure how to describe the effect this jacket would have, but it'd be awesome.

So yeah, I'd say all of those would have sex appeal, and they all adapt the look differently.

I think bits of the STALKER look can be drawn into this, and in order to widen the scope of the look, we might want to think about incorporating vague surplus castoffs or modern tactical gear - which is basically a blend of militaria and sportswear.
Maybe it is a different direction at first, but remember that most of the camo garments I'm posting are usually available in olive & black, sometimes even solid blue or white snow camo - there just aren't any high res pics of those most of the time because the target market is all operators.
Finally, it's up to us to take these garments and put them in a new context. The beautiful Musto Sailing jackets, for example, could easily imply more than their designers intended, were they placed in the right context by other garments in the outfit.
