the whole 'fashion' aesthetic, the black and white fuckers who look so mysterious and aloof, it seems to be becoming this subculture that exists to celebrate 'aesthetics' above all else. those of the human body, anyway. it's this urban modernism type thing, right? luxury, anxiety, sensuality, detachment, mystery, all wrapped up into one. well it seems to be rampant on tumblr, all these people posting black and white pictures, often with emphasis on skin, nakedness. It's supposed to be sensual, or art, or something.

What I don't understand is how that affects anyone. The superficiality of the obsession seems evident to me. I get that we were all raised on a steady diet of professional photography: on TV, in magazines, on the internet, etc., and nobody really escapes from that with their aesthetic ideas unchanged. But the monochrome style that people have settled on feels, to me, empty of any outside influence. Some would call that purity, well, to me it looks more like the product of a boring mind.

that's something pretty personal which is going to vary wildly from one person to the next. some have always worn garments something like what we wear now, and these are just especially luxurious or well executed versions thereof. some do appreciate history or fashion history and select clothing that reflects that. some people watched a lot of black and white golden era hollywood films and like clothing that emulates the appearance. most people are probably a combination of these and other influences.

I cant really speak for other people, but for me its combination of several things in regards to this style that appeal to me.

For one, i view getting dressed as kind of a personal art project, where you get to experiment with different forms, textures, colors, tones, silhouettes, and proportions. Many of the designers I admire, offer me unusual or interesting tools in order to achieve those forms/textures/etc that are quite different that the tools i would find at a thrift shop or a uniqlo.

Another thing is an appreciation for clever construction and ideas within garments, i like finding parts of something i wear that is very well thought out or a complex idea that someone tried to execute within that garment. To me its like discovering a hidden part of a building, its exploratory in a smaller sense.

Another thing i like is that some of the designers i like have similar ideals to my own, in regards to how they conceive of, and construct their clothing. When i read about certain ideologies of bauhaus architects or designers that inspire me, i can see bits and pieces of their teachings in the aesthetic that, for example, helmut lang followed within his work.

I was going to say this earlier but forgot: there are two ways of saying that outside influences affect how you dress. the first is to say that you look to other sources to find ideas that can be made relevant to how you dress. studying architecture can help you come up with new ideas about fashion, definitely. but here fashion is the end goal, and the other sources are useful. the other thing you can mean is that fashion is a result of the influences you already have. and this is closer to what I meant. my ideas about fashion cannot help but be heavily shaped by everything I have known and admired in the world up to now.

My interest is more in design/visual arts rather than specifcally the human body but yeah I get what you're saying.
