I agree, LA has probably the cheapest and highest quality access to fabric in the country. NYC is way more expensive to buy materials and pay for samples. Its a great place to start producing garments because it can be done very cheaply.

My gripe is more with the caliber of design that is being produced, and the lack of innovation and informed design in LA. In my experience, the bar is not set very high.

tbh if i had the talent and backing and was offered to show at la i don't think i'd take it, i don't think it would court the right publicity or b conducive to a luxury image. would rather show @ paris, even off schedule. or nyc.

I just think that the level of design is so low mostly because there is not a demand for good design in LA, or the demand is met from designers outside of LA. Either way, the designers here are not equipped or trained to create garments on the level of people based/trained in paris/london/milan/antwerp.

But yeah i think most of the people that show in LA, show because they dont have a viable alternative. Ofc everyone wants to show in paris but that requires a large platform of support to start with and a large financial investment. NY is still not on the level of EU fashion weeks, but at least buyers show up at shows and actually purchase designs.

yea, but even if u lack the ability to get on the schedule at paris or whatever ur prob still better of doing presentations in europe. doing a showroom in paris off schedule still says something, showing at la is like asking ppl 2 ignore u

>> No.6268269

>>6268253

you need to prove you know how to make patterns, its not like you show the boss a certificate and he says ok youre hired.

usually they test you by giving you a complex thing to make, and see how well you do at reproducing it.

so i guess the only qualification is being able to actually do it.

>> No.6268294

>>6268267

>showing at la is like asking ppl 2 ignore u

i wouldnt say that, i put together a presentation for the last LA fashion week with my friend, and he has gotten excellent contacts with photographers and stylists through it, also an article/photos of his work were posted on wwd.

which is a decent start, and he didnt really have the money to go abroad to show.

paris is obviously better, but gaining connections and industry credibility is better than nothing.

no most of the fakes I do are not sold as the same brand. they are done in high quality leather, and we just do something like change the pocket location and the colors/textures of leather, and its sold as an entirely different brand.
