You don't take the time to be grateful for your existence, you aren't learning anything truly exciting or perhaps your life is too easy and you find yourself drifting into a sated apathy.
You could just be lacking a sense of wonder and hope, or maybe you're clinically depressed.

Start by making small changes, whether it's making your bed, taking a shower or whatever small task you'd love to put off but know that you shouldn't. If you have the day off, why not force yourself to go to a sunny park bench, read a book and enjoy a cup of coffee? Turn off your cellphone and try to pay attention to the world around you. Don't draw any conclusions about it, and stop yourself from passing judgements. Just go out, experience the world and its people and regard it all as objectively as possible. Submerge yourself in the experience of living, and your apathy will pass (assuming it's not rooted in physiology). Exercise helps a lot.

Start with a program that lets you lay out sounds in a 16 step grid program like FL, then move to an older piece of gear when you feel comfortable with the concepts. Or just stay with computers. I prefer gear only, because it doesn't crash or get hardware conflicts, it's portable and its tactile.

I'm going to second this. The Roland MC-505 is like a sequencer, synthesizer, and a drum machine in a tight-little package. The damned thing is a powerhouse.

At the very least the 505 will teach you the rudiments of sequencing, pattern making, and synthesis. The best part is--it has many classic techno sounds built in, you can play around with the LFO and resonance filters for hours.

So yeah, definitely look into this machine.

Sounds like you shouldn't DJ then

It's possible to program out drums and bass, and then play along on a synth if that's your style - absolutely nothing wrong with that

However - remember that with DJs playing their own music - the hard work has already been done when the track is made - the reward and fun is playing it in the setting of your choice

nope. A synth is an instrument, like a piano. If you want to make your own music withour a PC you need shitload of gear. Start with a computer, with a decent DAW (doenst really matter which) and a decent midi controller.

You're looking too far ahead, man. Learn the basics of sequencing. With the proper machines you can save your programmed drum tracks, bass lines, and synthesizers. Using a MIDI configuration, you can "fire off" these tracks in real time. And, of course, you want a stand-alone synth to add in live improvisation.

There are no "sets" with synthesizers.

Yes, you could theoretically play an entire set on a 505. One nice feature is that it lets you mix sections of different songs together, so you can introduce a melody from song B into song A until A becomes B, if you follow. It's also easy to use as a sequencer for external gear and as >>6243577 has said, it can be a real powerhouse.

You'll have to get creative to make it sound uniquely you, but that's just a matter of building your own sounds and taking the time. The LCD screens were taken from the Juno series and some tended to fail, but replacing them is kid's play and your seller should tell you if it will be necessary. Usually it isn't.

edit to add - an MC-505 isn't really a synth - it's a groovebox. It has drum machines, a sequencer and a synth inside of it, but it's not a synth. It's a groovebox, which is a self contained music production station.

>> No.6244046

That's the mixer, it's not actually "making" any sounds at all. It's taking all the sounds that the synths and drum machines are making and mixing them together. The knobs above each channel control stuff like Equalization, which changes the timbre of the sound (how harsh or dull it is) and Pan (left and right speaker balance) as well as other stuff like effects sends that you don't need to worry about yet.

If you want to start simple, try creating a new file with the blank template. You will end up with just a mixer ("Centroid" in audiotool parlance) connected to the Master Output module.

Drag a "Bassline" synth from the right onto the table. It will automatically connect to channel one of the mixer. Press play on the toolbar. Try adjusting the synth knobs.

Don't really listen to hardstyle, but I think you could. You need to be creative with the thing. Stack multiple sounds on top of one another, use all 64 synth voices at once, really thicken up the sound layer by layer by layer, otherwise it's going to sound tinny. On nearly any machine, too. You have to get a feel for how to build patches, how to add voices, how to layer and pan. It's pretty easy stuff, you can learn it with a bit of light reading and some common sense.

Sorry for giving you links, the question comes up and tbh I can't remember most of my favorites half the time - there are so many. I'm presently reading China Mieville's RailSea for distraction. Imagine a very violent Ghibli film.

the drum of choice in electro music is the 808, but I don't know if you're referring to electro the genre

>> No.6245207

>>6245186
I think the ESX-1 is a better choice, it's alost the same thing as the EMX but you can swap out all the sounds for samples. I have two, I fill them up with vinyl sourced samples. They're good for a lot of things, if you take the time to get to know them. The ESX gives you much more choice than the EMX and the machine becomes much more 'endless'.

You can do anything you want on a 505. In my opinion it's best suited to ambient electro, synthed out experimental hip hop and minimal house tracks. You have to think outside of the box when you use it, learn to layer and automate the knobs.

like ambient stuff. or boards of canada type stuff or something

ETA - Learning to really master something like the ESX will take you a while, though. Your best bet is starting with a seq/synth/drum machine combo like a Groovebox.

I wouldn't get too caught up on "the right gear" for a specific genre. It's more about how you use it.

Also electro is a specific early-80s genre that had hip-hop elements. The term isn't used for electronic music in general.

>> No.6245216

>>6245207
so you are saying that for a beginner, a 505 would be better for most stuff, but if you are planning on doing a lot of sampling, the esx-1 is the way to go?

would it be cool if i started with a 505 and then got like a launch pad for samples

If you got a launch pad later on, you could control it from the 505 with MIDI, and program when it triggers on the 505.

ok. thats getting a little complicated for me right now.

so the 505 has a good capability of making non house and dance music also?

The speakers are too close to the turntables so when vibrations are emitted by the speakers they cause the needle to vibrate which destroys the quality of the sound, the needle, and the groves of the records.

If anything those speakers look like they could be pretty cool and I would actually like a link to the amazon page because I need new speakers.

If I'm recording scratching or taking a sample, I monitor the mix in-ear with the speakers off.
I mostly use the speakers for monitoring my machines and my final recording.
I don't use my turntables for actual DJing all that much, they're really just tools in an arsenal for when I need samples or cuts.
It's kind of all jerry-rigged together - I don't use any computers to make the stuff so I do what I can with whatever I can find at radio shack/sam ash.

>>6245406
It's only got about 30 viable seconds of sample time but you can do that dreamy clams casino stuff beautifully if you know what you're doing. It's intended to be a drum, but it's fun to twist the sounds into instruments - Have you tried making dub chords from impulse clicks yet?

One last synth and then I'm out. This is the Teenage Engineering OP-1. It's handheld, portable, battery powered, very versatile and has built in motion meters and an FM radio to sample from. This is my next cop, I think. Just a toy to lighten the mood & rediscover the art with.

>>6245607
So many reasons... They aren't portable in the same way, and the buttons aren't dedicated. They're prone to crashing and hardware conflicts, and getting blue screen in the middle of a set is just humiliating enough of an idea to keep me far away... I've seen it too often. There's also something that's just.. real about using hardware, you know? When you really have a sampler mapped out in your head and all the parameters have dedicated knobs, you just work differently. It feels more satisfying on a base creative level.
It's also a standardized format and a self contained unit. If A guy is really killing shit by hand on a sampler, you want to watch and see him work, and that's just not the same on a computer, even with a controller interface.
Each machine also has a very unique sound.

>>6245502
Thanks for that, brother. I'm considering it, tbh. I feel like I might wait until after summer, though.

Get a 1200, like the gentleman says. Thing'll outlive you.
I know there are a lot of others out there, but I've never needed anything else and cheaper models just don't have the torque I want. Or maybe they do, nowadays. Since I got my 1200's, I haven't looked once.

Pic related is a grail turntable - the QFO.
A mixer is built into every side, it plays in reverse, hardly ever skips and take note of the pitch slider on the outer rim of the platter for quick access without endangering the tone arm. There's also an internal battery for live performance and you can route an MP3 player into it and practice scratching on your headphones.

No, but you can use one to save your patterns and patches built from the onboard sounds. You can do a lot with them, believe me. If you want groovebox functionality with sampling, look up the MC-909. A lot more expensive, probably.

>>6249837
I run the turntable into a mixer, and output the mixer via line into the sampler. I have another sampler that uses fiber optic line ins, and another that takes WAV files via USB.
Basically, you record yourself playing the original recording.

>>6245244
You can shape the hell out of the sounds that are already on it, as well as stack groups of sounds together that trigger as one sound. Any sort of pitching and filtering you can imagine.

Great! You're on a wonderful path, composing is a joy that feels like nothing else.
Stick with it! There's nothing wrong with biting or copying! Make something that YOU would want to hear - that's the only rule you need to follow.
That and don't give up: tha 505 is a very complex machine and you're going to need some time to tease out its secrets.

Good luck!
